As a Canadian, I've all my body and lens registered with canadian custom so there would be no question upon returning, I've learned from buying a bag in fort huron mi an declaring it I was ask all kind of questions about my camera and lens, luckily I had my bills of sale and was able to prove the origin of my équipement, as of CPB may i suggest you check with US custom service about your returning, while you're in Québec check Gosselin photo store in Ste foy, you might find something interesting

You might also take a trip across the river, there is a belvedere a top the cliff that offer a very nice view of the château Frontenac and the basse ville sous le cap, go there a bit before sunset you should be coming back with some good shot

The Old City has the feel of Paris. It is a wonderful place.

My wife and I are planning to be Quebec City in mid-July. We have never been there and are looking forward to the trip. We hope to get some good photos while there. Which leads me to a couple of questions:

We are flying into Canada from the US. What is involved with customs in regards to the camera gear? Do we need to give them a list? Or, get prior authorization from Canadian Customs? There are two DSLRs and numerous lens, flashes, etc. that we would take. We are not pros, but... well, you know... we have lots of "stuff".

And, we are looking forward to the old part of town. Looks very scenic and lots of interesting architecture. Have any of you been there and have tips/recommendations for us? Would you have any hotels that you would recommend?

No issues with your gear coming to Canada, that I'm aware off.
However, if you still have them, may I suggest bringing your sales receipts, or photocopies thereof?
Or, register the lot with US customs before leaving the States. With the difference in dollar exchange, you may be asked if you bought the items in Canada and provide proof...

We are planning to use a taxi during our visit. Not sure we would want or need a car. Is that a safe bet? We will be there for a week.

Even if you are not a very religious person but especially if you are, consider visiting St. Ann's cathedral. I thought it was really worth seeing. I've been there twice.

I was at St. Anne's in 1965 . Wonderful architecture . French Gothic I think .

We stayed at the Holiday Inn in downtown Quebec (it maybe the Ramada Inn because they keep changing the name and stuff. I don't know why). It is within easy walking distance of everything you will want to see and do.

My one photo tip is that you take the ferry between Quebec and Laval (across the St. Lawrence River); do it early in the morning and you'll get some great overall shots of the Frontenac and the old city. It will probably be the only photos you get without a lot of people milling about in them.

Have been to Toronto three times. Toronto is a great city to explore and has plenty of photogenic scenes. Good choice.I am a "photo enthusiast; Not a Pro. Have traveled much of the world, lugging CANON bodies, lens, peripherals and tripod. All bundled into a compact backpack, weighing approximately 25 pounds. In my old age, rather than continue being a "mule" for my photography. Got smart. Instead, traded in much of my stuff and streamline by travels to a new SONY RX-10iv. Recently traveled to Bermuda and Nassau, getting acquainted with the Sony. In all events, customs and immigration were never a problem. My web page (FLIKR) is https://www.flickr.com/photos/104410459@N08/
A final NOTE: New York LaGuardia Airport is the worse AP in the world. Clearing in from overseas is like entering a 3rd World country.

No issues bringing your camera stuff back to the US. Don't fret or waste your time about reciepts.

Things are generally more expensive in Canada. They get the exchange rate.

All good advice. It's like visiting Europe only on this side of the pond. We walked the walls -- many moons ago. As several have indicated, you don't need transportation inside the old city. The drive suggested outside is also most interesting. You might check out B&Bs for lodging. Enjoy!

I know that is true for many things, even after dollar conversion.
Not true for everything however. I just checked the Olympus websites, US and Canada.
OM-D E-M5 is listed as US$999.99 on the US website and CAD$1000 on the Canadian website.
Convert the Canadian price to US, and it's about US $728.00.
Depending on how much the States allows you to bring back, customs sure could be interested in this.
I have found when crossing the border in either direction, sales receipts are good proof of purchase.

Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre is NOT a cathedral; it's a basilica. The cathedral for the archdiocese of Quebec is Notre-Dame de Quebec.

It's important to have these things straight.

I have been sternly corrected for misusing the proper designations by clergy from ALL faiths. It is a matter of respect for them, so tread carefully and ASK! The're glad for your interest and the chance to tell you EVERYTHING!

Have a fabulous trip to Quebec, OP>

"Cathedral" comes from the Latin word for "chair," indicating the throne of the ruling bishop. A basilica is the type of buiding. Now you know more than you ever wanted to!
