I have a D7100 and I have been contemplating getting the D500 since it came out. With the current deal, I have been hovering over the "add to cart" button on B&H for 2 days now.
My current walk around lens is a Nikon 18-200 vrii. My decision to pull the trigger or not is based on whether I should get the 16-80 mm lens with it. Any opinions from the knowledgeable UHH crowd that have used both lenses?? I have read all the reviews many times but would like some input from here. Getting it with the body knocks about $400 dollars off the price.
I wouldn't, you pretty much already have that focal length covered. Get a longer lens and increase your reach a little or a specialty lens like an 8 or 10mm.

Wow! I must have written this under an assumed name! I am in exactly the same position! Same cameras, same lenses. I am working hard to resist, though. Keep us posted on what you decide to do.👍🤓👍
If you do a lot of wildlife or BIF,the D500 focus capabilities are top shelf and as you know, the D7100 does a good job as well. If you are a serious user,go for it,minus the lens as previously mentioned. I have both and have reasonable experience with each.

Always listen to the voice of reason as difficult as it is to cull from the mass idiocy and misinformation present on this site.
The D500 was one of my best purchases since I bought my D810. Coupled with the Nikon 24-120 it makes a wonderful walking around combination.

I bought the D500, when it first came out, with the 16-80 lens. That lens now spends most of its time either on my D7200 or in my Nikon case. The two lenses I use most often on my D500 are the 28-300 and the 200-500.
If you don't do a lot of photography that requires the D500's speed then your D7100 is more than adequate. If it's wifi you want, get a wifi SD card for your D7100.

Well, since I have a 10-20 Wide angle, a 35 mm f/1.8 and a 60 mm f/2 macro (nice portraits) in addition to the 18-200; I guess I don't really need a 16-80 unless it blows everything in that range out of the water with its IQ, etc. From what I am hearing, it doesn't. I also have the Sigma 150-500 C which I will use a lot on the D500 for BIF and wildlife. The D7100 is great but its buffer size drives me crazy since I shoot Raw, and I really would love the low light capabilities of the D500.

If I didn't have some other financial commitments right now, I'd jump at the chance to replace my D7100 (actually keep it as my backup). The small buffer on the D7100 drives me nuts, too. Best to you on your decision. I think you'd be very happy with the D500.

I have the D500 w/grip also use the 28-300 and 200-500 with it and love it. I hear B&H has a great deal for it with grip extra battery bag and more. Let us know what you do.

May I ask what you are doing to have the buffer size issues referenced? Is this a frequent occurrence?

I use the continuous shooting function for BIF or other moving wildlife shots. I am sure any sports photographer relies on it also. If you shoot RAW, the buffer on the D7100 fills up very fast (after a few shots) and then you have to wait until it downloads to the card. A fast card helps but not that much. The buffer of the D500 is huge and also shoots at a faster rate.
