Yes I'm a musician also. I played out for many years. To Me Photography is another way of expressing myself!

I'm likewise struck with a strong connection between people in the medical professions and music; I see this all the time, tho' I'm not a doctor myself. Is there a photography/medical connection too?

Similar to "jbump's" observation, as an engineer most of my career, I found a surprising number of musicians among the other engineers I worked with. These all happened to be the computer engineer sort, not the train type . . .

A quick show of hands please. How many photographers here are also musicians? I find it interesting that so many people who are "artistic" often are so in more than one discipline. Ansel Adams was also a classically trained pianist, you have Ralph Gibson, and more recently people like Brian Adams, Nikki Sixx (no joke!), and Graham Nash. All are well known musicians and are also Photogs. My father was a photographer and jazz drummer who must have rubbed off on me because I'm also a musician in addition to being a photographer. My eldest son, who plays multiple instruments, also has a keen eye for photography.
I'm sure that there have been many studies on this, but I'm just wondering how many in our little community practice both arts.

I played the flute from fifth grade through high school. Sat 2nd chair to my best friend. Loved being in the marching band. Learned "Flight of the Bumblebee" for my dad. Later, when I had young children, learned how to play piano and organ. Unfortunately, neither of my children took to music and I probably couldn't play a tune now! Oh yeah, I sang too...in school & in the church choir and as part of a little folk group called "Just Us".

Thanks for reminding me of some of the fun times I had in my youth! Today, my other artistic talents include creating beautiful scrapbooks of my pictures and even my job requires some artistic abilities.

When you are playing a ride you are showing how you are interpreting the music. When you see a subject that you want to photograph I think you see something that you want to express.

Guitar and banjo. My main profession for most of my life. You may even have one of my CD's in your collection.

I'm the fiddler in a small group of professors called "Academic Probation." I build violins and ukuleles sometimes and play with the tenor uke.

I've been playing the bagpipes for 22 years - does that count? ;-)

I've often thought it would be great to be both a piper and a wedding photographer so I could get paid twice for the same wedding...

Growing up in Athens Greece (DoB: 2/14/1937), I experienced the brutality of WW II and came close to getting killed four times. At age 10, I felt the urgent need to study music. I started with piano and graduated to voice, singing and playing for myself. I never had the resources to pursue a career (I would have become either an opera singer or a composer) but became good enough to sing with professional choirs, one of them until recently, specializing in J. S. Bach. I see there are a few classically trained musicians on this list. My best musical accomplishment has been the mastery of the art song, especially German Lieder. Schubert (seven volumes of songs), Schumann (three volumes), and Brahms (four volumes) have been life-long companions. Lieder is certainly acquired taste, almost impossible to practice as a profession except in NYC but a most satisfying genre, as well as the most challenging form of performance: alone on stage with a pianist and no props, but supposed to interpret great music on great poetry. I have had very few chances to perform (:

Many in my family play. I only repair their amps and mic's. I also take photographs of any music act that allows me too and some that ask me too. Does that count for anything? LOL

Amatuer musician (guitar, voice, keyboards) and amateur photographer and videographer. Never considered doing music or photography for money. There's far too many people more talented than I am at both, but I enjoy doing my best. Did a little oil painting years ago but didn't stick with it. Also seems to be some cross over to computer professionals. I was a sys admin and dba until I retired.

I posted earlier that I play bass, guitar and mandolin, but since you brought it up I'm also a sys admin. Maybe there is a connection between all three.
