I must have been half asleep at the keyboard the other night when I set up a password for logging onto my computer. Yup, can't remember it! There is a "hint" given, but even that doesn't do the trick! I'm locked out of my other computer! If I remember correctly, there is a file readable in DOS that contains the password but I can't remember how to access it. If I shut the computer down by unplugging it, it will come on and allow me to start in safe mode but not in DOS. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks
Booting and running Linux from a CD/DVD will allow you to see the entire windoze install. You can find the password. There are videos on YouTube regarding hacking passwords. Good luck.

Thanks for the info! Where would I get a Linux disk? All I've ever run is Windows.
There is hope. There is always a back door. I just don't remember the way. Got a Best Buy close? Or visit your local copy machine sales and service. Comic book geeks are usually computer nerds. Or just change you login and/or password.

Thanks. The problem is it will not allow me to get to the prompt. I can't get past the first screen where it asks for a password!

Are you booting into safe mode (hold down f8 during boot)? You get that option before windows starts and asks for a PW.
If for some reason you can't get into safe mode, then get into the BIOS at boot up (method varies, but typically hold down the delete key). Then set the boot order to boot from CD first. Insert the Windows system disk in the CD drive and reboot. When the windows installation runs, it will ask if you wish to repair an existing Windows installation. Choose the recovery console which will provide a command prompt.
You can get a Linux disc from osdisc.com. I suggest using pclinuxos for this.
You need a technician. Call a service center and explain your situation and hopefully they can help. I supported a large company and routinely had to reset someone's forgotten password. You can't just read the password because it is encrypted. A Linux boot CD with a password blanker app installed is required. The last OS password I reset was on an XP.

Back in the old days there used to be a jumper on the motherboard for resetting BIOS passwords, if that's your issue.

There's no password on the OP's BIOS, it's the password on the OS that's the issue/problem. If all else fails and the OP's data is backed up, then reinstalling the OS using the system disk (and reloading the data from backup) will solve the problem.
Best luck I've had is with Trinity Rescue Kit, download the iso from
www.trinityhome.org Burn the iso to a cd or flash drive and boot the computer to that. The trinityhome site has the how to info. It allows you to activate the administrator user and set that pw. From there you can reset your pw.
Don't worry, all is not lost. Heck, nothing gets lost these days. There are multiple copies of your password out there.
Check with the NSA, I'll bet they have it. Or, check with one of their Data Gathering attendants; Siri, Alexa. All you have to do is ask.
Perhaps your Samsung TV was watching you enter the password? Check with it...or your Thermostat, Refrigerator, Light Bulbs, etc.
Be prepared, some of these devices can be pretty stubborn. I had to water board Alexa last week to get the truth about the Moon landings. <Grin>
