90% of my shooting landscapes is done alone. If in a new area I do research on-line and acquire Topographic maps of the area(s) to travel to. Other people with me sort of "weight me down". One or two other photographers (if I have been to any location is ok) = but for a first-time experience = I go alone.

Traveling with non-photographers usually produces many rushed shots or missed opportunities.

I have always been a "loner" when it comes to photography. Occasionally I stop along the way when my wife is with me - she is very patient and always carries a book in the car. But, for the most part I photograph alone. I take all of the sensible safety precautions when in the wilderness, but mostly I am alone. Last year, for the first time I went on a group trip to the Galapagos and learned a lot. I learned that photographers, as a group, are no different than other people. Some are great companions with knowledge and experience to share and some are jerks who think nothing of stepping in front of you to get their shot. I am going to try the group 'thing' again in a couple of weeks in South Africa on a small group safari (six shooters). It too will probably be a mixed experience but my hopes are high.

Large groups can be a nightmare because everyone has their own agenda and you usually come away disappointed. Small groups are good but I have not problem going by myself unless as previously stated going into an undesirable area - then at least 1 other person.

When I am travelling with non-photographers I use a point and shoot and take tourist shots. Never take a 'safari' that isn't designated as a 'photo safari'. You will probably be crowded into a small mini-bus and have to shoot through the windows - when the driver decides to stop for 'photos'.

There are times when I would really like to just go by myself. Just a little "me" time....hike, or go to a local spot, nothing risky...but my dear hubby won't have it. He's a good sport, I can't complain, he just doesn't like me to go off on my own. His argument is always the safety issue. He comes along, doesn't complain, I can take all the time I want, but it's still not "me" time.

Whrider,
Never underestimate the value of a good "Henchman" in the early and late hours. And most emphatically, one who "loves you more than anything!" And help him feel useful by carrying the tripod and drinks, and lunch money. Compared to safety, "me time" is over rated.

You have a good husband. Mine wouldn't want to go so I go by myself. Also go to dog shows by myself.

I am almost always alone. My husband does not like to go with me on a regular basis as he does not have the slightest interest in photography and not much in nature either. My family is also similarly disinterested as well. I find that it's really hard to set up a shot and concentrate with disinterested people around- I always feel (internally) pressured to hurry. Even with people with an interest in photography I find it can be a challenge being with someone that does not have complimentary interests. Most of my excursions are in populated areas, rarely do I head off alone to isolated places. In the event that I do I usually convince my husband to go too and he is agreeable.

In Texas, I take my German Shepherd Dogs with me..... they are trained well enough to not pose threats to wildlife/people/pets etc.... the peace of mind their company provides me is priceless.... I can concentrate on & enjoy photography .... when traveling, hubby insists on being my backup.... he is stoic, brings a book & never complains....
