I have a Nikon D5200 and have just taken delivery of a lens I bought on ebay. The lens states Nikon AF Nikkor 70-300mm 1.4-5.6 G. The box says Nikkor F AF G. S/N 2273184.
I put it on the camera, switched on, but there was no autofocus. There is no switch for auto or manual. It would seem that if I wish to focus, I have to do it by hand.
The box and the lens were made for each other as the S/Ns match. The lens clicked into place happily so I am hoping that someone will have the answer.
I do not get any sound when I press the shutter half way as I do with my 18-135mm.
As I prefer to take landscapes, focussing manually is not too much of a problem.
Thanking you in advance.

This lens is the old outdated screw AF lens. It will not AF on your camera as the 3xxx and 5xxx cameras are not compatible with many Nikon AF lenses. Yes they mount but that does not guarantee compatibility. You need to get a chart found on the internet or go to the Nikon web site and look at their compatibility chart to make sure the lens you are looking at is compatible with your particular model of camera. Just be careful when buying lenses and don't fall for the myth that if it fits it works.

Being pre-owned, you likely did not get the manual with it.
See: https://cdn-10.nikon-cdn.com/pdf/manuals/lenses/AF/AFSVR70-300_4.5-5.6G.pdf
pages 3, 15, 17
(I don't use anything Nikon, so may be completely off the mark).

MT-Shooter hit the nail on the head. The D5000 line does not have a focus motor in the camera body so each lens must have the focus motor. The Nikon lenses have an "S" to indicate that while other brands indicate in the literature or otherwise.

Mshooter is again correct. Nikon did not stop making entry level camera's without focus motors.... The 3xxx and 5xxx series bodies do not have focus motors. The lens you bought requires a focus motor.

Nothing fishy here. It's the way it was built. Buy a more expensive camera with a focus motor and you will be fine, although the the lens is not a superior product.

Thank you. Very helpful.

I sugest you make a list of lenses that are not compatible with your camera body and steer clear of them in the future. Now you should put this lens back up on eBay for sale since I dont think it would be fair to request a refund from the seller nor to give the seller bad feedback.

No need for a list. If the lens doesn't have AF-S on the barrel it will not autofocus with a D3XXX or D5XXX camera. The reason has been well covered.

Not quite. The D3xxx and D3xxx will autofocus all AF-I, AF-S, and AF-P lenses equally well.

This is a pretty easy chart to use to keep track of what works with what.

Or buy a D50 in good shape. You can pick one up for $30.00 and they still take amazing pictures. I have been through 5 iterations of DSLR's since I bought my D50 but I have never thought about selling that Camera. It takes a licking and keeps on ticking. ( Of course the D50 has a lens motor built into the body.)

D90, D80, and D300 also have focus motors too. All of these are a step above a D50.

Agree Soul Dr. There is something about the D50 the others don't have however. For one thing they have a top of the body LCD screen readout. Of course they also have a autofocus motor built into the body. I still grab my D50 with the 18-200 VR lens attached and shoot some amazing pictures with it during the summer. Would not part with it.

Nikon's new AF-P lenses will also focus on cameras that do have the autofocus motor. But you need a firmware update to turn off VR on some of them. And I'm not sure if it will work cameras older than five years or so.

I don't know about others, but my D90 also has the top LCD info screen too. And I know what you mean about the D50. I would never part with my D90 either. It may not have all the bells, whistles and more mega pixels as the newer models, but it captures great images and is built like a tank.
I have other DSLRs and mirrorless cameras, but I seem to use the D90 more. It's like true and trusted friend to me.
