It would probably not get so hot in the sun is the only advantage I can see.

This becomes increasingly more important in the lower latitudes .....

Is there really any advantage to a lens being colored white ?

Absolutely.
Super tight tolerances and long lenses that are affected by solar gain. Also the Rare mineral and glass elements used by Canon perform better if not stressed by a chassis that is over heating and distorting. They found the white (Not really white) color gives their lenses an advantage in a wider range of climate conditions. Finally it is a great marketing tool when you go to an event with telephoto lenses and they are virtually all white saying this is what pros prefer by a huge margin. Pretty savvy.

It's not convection, but radiant heating that can affect lenses. A pro lens is generally pretty well sealed, and without ventilation the temps inside the lens barrel can get up there. Lubricants and electronics can suffer. Light colored lenses reflect heat better, and with heat sensitive elements made of Fluorite and ED, it helps keep the temperature-based physical expansion to a practical minimum. But, there is no denying the marketing aspect.

Many of the white Nikon lenses are made for foreign markets. However, I have a US 600mmF4 in light gray, and I have seen the 24-70, 70/80-200, and the 300 F2.8 in addition to the 400, 500 and the 800.

It is also worth noting that many wildlife shooters cover their white lenses in tight fitting elastic camo material - but they are usually in the higher/cooler latitudes - although white can be camo in snow conditions !

In lower latitudes I would be using a white lens and if the situations warranted, have a loose fitting camo material to cover the lens with.

While on the black or white subject, I tried to find a white camera bag, ever try to find a white bag? When I spent many hours in the western deserts I carried my equipment in coolers to avoid frying everything and carried a white cloth to lay over my camera when it was on a tripod.

Of course the camo or whatever cover protects even black lenses from the solar heat gain so it is valuable.

Yes. But, I'm contractually restricted from divulging the information.

Back in the day, a young engineer for Canon offered a half-heart-ed suggestion on her first project. Let's make the lens white so people notice it. The idea stuck. Her name was Teala Photo. She worked for Canon for many years and passed away from over exposure in 2007. Now you know.

Avoid Canon White. It will, and has been proven, to ruin any other brands.
No really.

For sure , you can just see how that board meeting went down , OK men we got to boost our sales with our zooms , any ideas,
Sure make them in White , and charge more for them ,but make them a tad better than the conpation, that way once they get known
As good performers , we can scale back on quality and still charge the same

Yes, MORE valuable on dark lenses.
