Noisy Night Photography with Nikon D70

Several months ago I lent my Nikon D70 to my daughter who lives 900 miles away. She is having difficulty with noisy, available light, night photos. I have given her the general advice of manually using lower ISO settings, slow shutter speeds, wide aperture settings and turning on Noise Reduction (this only takes affect at shutter speeds slower than one second).

What other automatic settings can be overridden that may affect the noise?

Any other advice?

Burt,
I own a D70 and admittedly it's a lot noiser than the newer cameras. Your advise was correct, especially about turning on the noise reduction.
Following those procedures, I've taken pictures at night but there's still some noise. The only answer is to get it out in post. Lightroom 3 does a great job and so dose, Topaz DeNoise.

One method that works pretty well if you are shooting from a tripod is image averaging. You can get detailed info free here:

I also have experienced high noise levels using a Nikon D70 (at ISO 640). Key is to use the lowest ISO you can, ISO 100 or 200. For night shots that would require a tripod.

Noise is like the "snow" we used to see on TV. It shows up worst on flat areas of color. If you will visit this website you will find aq clear explanation of noise, with illustrations and suggestions on how to avoid it and a number of ways to remove it. You will also find a plethora of other photo info.

Noise, in the digital photography world, is the graininess which becomes more noticable in the picture when the camera is set to higher ISO settings. It usually is introduced in the earliest of the many phases of the transformation of photons into an analog electronic signal, then into a digitally coded file, and susequently into an analog image on a screen or output to a printer. In essence the harder the electronic circuits have to work, the noisier (grainier) the picture. This is especially true when trying to capture low light images.

There are many discussions of image noise to be found online. A straightforward discussion is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_noise

"The only stupid question is the one not asked."

To quieter pictures.
