I have a Nikon D5200 and have just taken delivery of a lens I bought on ebay. The lens states Nikon AF Nikkor 70-300mm 1.4-5.6 G. The box says Nikkor F AF G. S/N 2273184.
I put it on the camera, switched on, but there was no autofocus. There is no switch for auto or manual. It would seem that if I wish to focus, I have to do it by hand.
The box and the lens were made for each other as the S/Ns match. The lens clicked into place happily so I am hoping that someone will have the answer.
I do not get any sound when I press the shutter half way as I do with my 18-135mm.
As I prefer to take landscapes, focussing manually is not too much of a problem.
Thanking you in advance.

It's actually an f4-5.6G, and it's one of Nikon's kit lenses. Currently selling on Nikonusa.com for 173.00, it is an Auto Focus lens. Sounds like you purchased a defective lens, if you have the option return it and get your money back. Then see about getting it new or refurbished rather than used, kit lenses aren't known for being built like tanks. As with all things on website purchases for lenses and such it's buyer beware. Not being able to handle the item before the purchase is definitely a big drawback but, that's why we have return shipping.

You camera requires an "AFS" lens, you will have no autofocus with an "AF" lense because your camera does not contain a mechanical focus drive system.

I could think of the possibility that the camera is not in AF mode. I could think also that perhaps the D5200 does not have a motor to drive the lens but I am not familiar with that camera.
There is always the possibility also that the AF on the lens in not working in which case it is not worth it to repair since the lens is not that expensive.
Try to buy second hand gear from a reputable dealer or from a member of forums like this one. Ebay to me is like a Russian roulette if you understand what I am saying.
Perhaps Nikon can give you the most appropriate answer to your AF problems.

Lenses are often marked as 1:2.8, or in the case for you zoom, 1:4-5.6. No way is a 70-300mm zoom lens ever going to be a 1:1.4 or f/1.4 lens.

I thought the AF compatibility problem was with Nikon D3*** cameras and older lenses. Something seems fishy.

MT-Shooter hit the nail on the head. The D5000 line does not have a focus motor in the camera body so each lens must have the focus motor. The Nikon lenses have an "S" to indicate that while other brands indicate in the literature or otherwise.

Sorry my bad, I didn't see that it was a D lens, it's the lack of camera body motor issue.

AF Nikkor lenses do NOT have a focus motor in the lens. Fro your D5200 to focus a lens it has to be AF-S. You are stuck with manual if you don't sell or trade the lens.

One of the reasons I have never parted with my D 50.

I believe Several have identified the issue. You must have a D7xxx or a full frame camera with a focusing motor built in.
