Most of your photos will probably be of sweeping vistas or something fairly close. So a simple "prime" lens in the 50mm range - or maybe 35mm for more wide-angle shots - will probably work great for you. And if you get Photoshop Elements or a similar program you can always crop your photos to emphasize what you want. The longer lenses would be most useful for wildlife.

When I read the original post I had vision of me bounceing around on a horse with my camera wasn't pretty

I'm not a horse rider, but that's what I pictured.

She said nothing about getting a better point and shoot.

Yes, - read the WHOLE OP - all of it - and then THINK about it ......

Without getting into camera vs lens vs confusion. What more do you want. How are you processing the image. Processing the image after taking it may make a significant difference. Also, a polarizing filter and learning how to use it andwhen it will help or hinder depending on the lighting. You are in beautiful locations and the camera and taking a photo are only part of the equation. There is such a difference between the potential final result and out of the camera that it might be a help to explore some of the options in taking a great image in camera and making that image pop. The potential for the final image rests in your hands after you have taken the shot.
Good luck. Enjoy the ride.

You may have read it but she never mentioned getting a better point and shoot.

Welcome! As a newer photo enthusiast, I would say there first post is the most accurate. A 35mm or 50mm 1.8 would do you well as a small discreet addition to your kit. I would strongly suggest an camera harness. Look on Amazon for ideas op/tech is pretty good and fiscally appealing.

Beyond that you can get anything you want if your prepared to spend some money.
Good luck and enjoy the ride.....and the camera!

Maybe you should read the question - ALL of it ....

Apparently the only one who hasn't read the question is you! The question is clearly stated New lens suggestion for new DSLR or keep shooting with the Point and shoot they already own. But apparently you want to answer the question you want asked not the actual question.

The D5300 came with the kit lens of 18-55mm lens but I am wanting something more low profile and one that I don't need to extend. Attached is one picture that I took with the Nikon Coolpix S9700 but I want to get better shots using my new camera.

Instead of having my binoculars strapped to my chest - I plan on having the camera. What do you all think?

Seems to me you are asking two different questions. Going by the pic you posted to get more you would have to go wider than 18mm. So that would call for a wide angle, 10 or 12mm zoom? To replace the binoculars you would need a long lens 200mm or better. The zooms in that range could be a problem getting sharp images from the back of a horse.

For me I would be concentrating of the vistas, not wildlife, at first. With that in mind I would choose the wide angle zoom or a 28 or 35mm prime.

This was the wording that impressed ME. Again, riding a horse, and on my person, I would not use a DSLR - I would use a "better" P&S tho ..... and I would definitely want a zoom lens of some kind on whatever camera I had - not a short prime cropped if needed - tho that can work - but then you are back to the quality of the P&S.

...I love my NikonAF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR ...its super quiet auto-focus also makes it ideal for video when you also want to here the sound of waterfalls...

In my opinion, the 35mm 1.8 would be very useful for Cindy. It is lightweight and can gather in lots of light in a darker situation. Riding on horseback, it would be rather cumbersome to carry a dslr with a heavy lens.

I ride horses a lot thru the spring/summer into the back country and have always just taken a point and shoot camera in order to have it on my hip and use during riding. However, I just purchased my first dslr - Nikon D5300 and am wondering what lens would be best to get for this type of shooting...straight from the horses back per say.
