What exactly does this switch due that is located next to the multi selector button?
When switched to lock does it keep the setting set for all pics taken? Nothing is mentioned in the manual or or on line. Please advise. Thanks, Allan

If you look through your view finder, you can toggle the focus points left, right,up,down with the selector. If you put the selector in the L position,it will lock the focus points where you left them.

From DPReview: The L switch is just to lock in the focus point. This camera has 11 focus points, were you can choose just one to focus with (or two other modes, for that matter). The L switch allows you to lock in the point you choose, so you can't by accident change it. Hint: Google is your friend! /Ralph

From the D500 User Manuel pdf: The focus selector lock can be rotated to the locked (L) position following selection to prevent the selected focus point from changing when the multiselector is pressed.

I think he has a D500 with 55 selectable focus points.

Isn't it the same for all Nikon models?

Probably on all of them with the Lock Switch. My D5300 doesn't have it.

No. I have the D5200 (no lock switch) and the D7200 (has the lock switch). Can't speak to any of the other models.

You are correct Mike. I forgot that here on the HOG when discussing the lock function we need to remember that by saying all Nikons some folks would assume that included cameras that don't have the lock.

I found out about the lock when my D7100 ceased to allow me to move my focus point. Resets wouldn't help,no luck with talking dirty, tough finding something in the manual. Off and on for a couple hours before I figured it out. Kind of stuck with me though.

I never lock it. I use single point focus and constantly move the focusing point. One more reason I don't use bbf is that my thumb is always busy.

Same thing happened to me with my D7200 after having had my D5200 for a couple of years. Drove me totally around the bend. Totally baffling. I do recall stumbling on the solution somewhere in the manual. It's definitely stuck with me, too!

School of hard knocks! The d810 has it as well.
