There's also WinMerge, for free, to compare files.

I use SyncBack SE to backup seven folders of files. I have it set to Mirror, so anything I delete from C will be deleted from the backups. Just for the fun of it, I made a box to hold two hard drives. I turn them on individually, and each is G.

Thanks Jerry

I agree. Syncback SE is a super program, but you need another drive to back up to.

I can only find that SyncBack (all versions) uses " Windows Task Scheduler" to "automate" the process. I am not that familiar with the operation of this program but would be interested if it (WTS) can be programmed to sequence the three different HDs during the process. (Hmmmm. Perhaps creating three separate macros would do it.)

Interesting DIY project but doesn't having to manually switch between the drives defeat the automate requirement?

You can not do all the exotic things you want to do cheap.

Maybe a small raid system would be good. Multiple hot swapable hard drives with a good backup program.

I don't like automatic backup. I prefer to decide what to backup, where, and when

Carbonite online backup saved my skin -- and thousands of photos.

I lean that way also but the OP asked for "automatic."

I am a LR CC user and I have a modest collection of 45,000 Images. I exported these images as a Catalogue from LR to 2, 5 TB external hard drives and a 2 TB Portable hard drive for travel. One external is kept off site. A while back on a different post a few hoggers said that exporting as a catalogue to an external hard drive is really not a good back up. I followed up with Adobe Help and they assured me the back up is legitimate and several uTube videos say the same. My gas or Paranoia begs me to ask the question is there an inexpensive or free software package that can systematically back up my images, as always grateful for your expert advice

Thanks

Not sure what you're backing up. You can back up just the catalog to CC and the image files using standard backup regimes.

Cloud backup is an excellent addition to external drives. See carbonite.com.

Thanks D you reinforce my old age paranoia I am grateful for your secondary recommendation as to your first paragraph I think I will dig a cellar with steel and concrete walls with a halon system and store my off site back up. You make me realize although so many images have great emotional and sentimental personal value there are far greater concerns in our world

Thanks
Joe

Or you could use a reliable cloud service if you have decent internet access. They already have those steel/concrete walls and Halon fire suppression (as well as redundant drives, servers, networking, power and professional administration)

There are several. For very little money, Acronis Trueimage is top-flight. About $50-60. The only problem with Acronis is that they are always updating and then nagging you to buy the latest. It's only $25+- but annoying.

There are also some good free ones. I used Comodo backup for a while and it was fine.I let my friend talk me into paying for Acronis, but I'm not sure I've got a better deal than Comodo. https://www.lifewire.com/free-backup-software-tools-2617964 is a list you can look at.

I concur about TrueImage value. I have used this program exclusively for about ten years now and quite often (too often <chuckle>) restore a whole disk drive to an earlier point in time on one of my (5) computers when disaster strikes. Rarely do I use it to recover lost files but whenever I do, it is fast and efficient.

The Task Scheduler is used by many applications that allow you to schedule an event. With SyncBack, it's as simple as setting up the schedule within SyncBack. It knows how to use the Windows Scheduler and will take care of that for you. You don't have to "create a macro".

It offers a lot of latitude.
