I just bought, on Ebay, for $1050, my second RX10III, having sold my first copy last year. Have an upcoming summer away from home and felt I can use the extra 200-600mm reach over my RX10 #1. Got to thinking...I have done this sort of thing in the past with lenses, bought and then sold, always used equipment and generally sell for about the same price as purchased on Ebay. So bottom line is it costs me about 10% (Ebay fee) to have an item for 6 months (use Paypal credit so no interest, no payments for 6 months). This is less expensive than my other hobby, golf, which runs about $60 per week. I get great enjoyment from exploring the use of various lenses and camera bodies, even buying the same thing twice!
Crazy like a fox :) I unfortunately buy new (most of the time) and sell used at a great discount. Apparently I'm not so smart so my hobby is quite expensive.

I have not had a single bad purchase on Ebay used with the exception of a single lens that did not focus properly and my purchase price was fully refund by Ebay's buyer protection program. I have found if you buy excellent condition with original packaging you have no difficulty in realizing a fair price on resale.
Yep, I am crazy as a loon. I search e-bay and craigs list every day. Only, I never seem to sell what I buy. I just buy more bags.
It use to be (not so long ago) that cameras and lenses held their value for quite awhile. Then manufacturers begin to put out new cameras 1-2 x year and the camera you bought rather recently is no longer worth near what you paid. So just recently I have changed my habits. I have begun buying new lenses only when the manufacturer discounts it or I buy used. Cameras I still buy new and try to catch an intro discount. There is something about having a new camera...

I've never done that with camera gear, but I have been married three times. Does that count?

Who has time to capture images when the Gas pains begin and that new shiny piece of hardware just sends a shiver up your leg... Is this an example of form over function or is medication required....

I must admit a fascination with bags as well; amazing deals out there...I got a Cotton Carrier duo for $29, a fabulous Lowepro $125 bag for $15! Low prices reflect a bias against used bags, kind of like buying a used shirt. Most of my bags came as part of a camera/lens/etc purchase.

If you want used bags I have plenty. Great shape. Some only used a couple of times. Check out classifieds yesterday- "I've got bags"

Don't feel strange or crazy, others do the same thing or worse.
I have a friend who used to own a gun shop/police gear store. He had one customer - Postal Inspector/Postal Police - who was constantly buying, selling back or trading only to buy again as he searched for the "perfect" set of weapons/gear. I believe his record was buying, selling, trading and buying back the same riot gun 5 times - with various accessories.

I've bought lots of used gear on ebay, but, except for one transaction, I've always lost money when I sold. If you're happy with the way it works, go for it.

When I buy on eBay, I always use "SnipeSwipe" and enter the highest price I want to pay. If it goes for more, so be it - but every so often, the bidding is light or the item is not popular and I get it for a great price. With Craigslist it is a bit more work, but patience always works. There was a like new in box Nikkor AF 35mm f/2D a few weeks ago listed for $350. Not a bad price. I offered $300 (low ball) which was rejected. It sat for a while and then one day, the seller changed the price to $280 and I was at his house same day to pick it up. [one of my craigslist "tricks" is to use multiple email accounts when making offers]
Right now I am watching a LNIB Nikkor AF 105mm f/2D DC with an ask of $950. Good price, but not good enough.

I always set an upper limit for myself, but I've never used a sniping service. An unpopular item with light bidding is ideal.

I love eBay for this reason, being lucky enough to afford a small loss I use eBay as my rental outlet. Every piece of equipment I own can be sold there, for something, eventually. I also bought and sold film cameras to make money for a few years. This allowed me to try some nice stuff and make money. Back in 1998-1999 I was able to flip about 60-70 rangefinder cameras for some spare cash. From about 2012 to 2015 it was amazing how many quality Nikon film cameras and lens were being given away. I made about 4000.00 over few years and got to play with some great Nikon and Leica equipment. (FM3A, FM2N, F3, 35TI, Leica CL) With eBay's policies and my knack for reading between the lines I have never been burned. I now have 1132 feedbacks. I don't buy anything without at least looking on eBay first.
PS my golf cost about $60 a week but I put the clubs away on Thanksgiving and don't take them out until Easter.
