I have not read all of the replies, but if you do not currently own a photographers backpack, you can carry every thing you have and use it as your carry on luggage.

On our first day out I was warned by a native to Not carry my camera off one shoulder, use an across body strap or hang it around your neck. Also watch out for pick pockets in crowded areas. I had two ladies try to get into my fanny pack where my spare lens was while in Madrid. They were walking and talking along side of us in crowded main square. The closest one was holding a folded map with one hand and apparently trying to unzip my bag with the other. After feeling a couple of bumps I turned to see what was going on, they quickly turned away and left us. It was then that I found the bag half unzipped. Other than that it was a fantastic trip. Have a great time.

Although allot of people eyed my D800 last month on our trip to Spain, Morocco and Gibraltar, I never had a negative experience like you did. I wore a Cotton Carrier with my D800 and 24-70mm f2.8mm attached. The Cotton Carrier locks your camera to your chest. You give the camera a quarter turn twist to quickly either lock or unlock the camera from the Cotton Carrier. The Cotton Carrier has a safety strap that snaps to your camera's neck strap attachment ring to prevent someone from grabbing your camera from your hands or from the camera accidently falling to the ground if you accidentally drop it. As added protection, I also keep my Nikon neck strap loosely around my neck.

During the trip, I used the carrier for over ten hours a day every day. The Cotton Carrier places the weight of my camera and lens equally on both of my shoulders along with my midback, taking all of the weight off my neck, which can be very painful since it was injured many years ago.

I also attached two Adorama Slinger soft lens cases to the Cotton's waist/mid back strap for my SB-700 flash and a 14mm lens (which I never used). I carried an 82mm CP filter in its case in my pants pocket and nothing else; my way of traveling light with a heavy camera.

I am traveling to Spain in about a month and trying to decide which lenses to take. I shoot with a Panasonic GX8 (mirrorless) camera and my lens choices are: Panasonic 7-14 mm (equivalent to 14-28 mm), Panasonic 12-35 mm (equivalent to 24-70 mm) and Panasonic 35-100 (equivalent to 70-200 mm). I would like to travel with just two of these to reduce weight and size of bag I will carry since we will be doing a lot of walking. I am pretty sure I will be taking the 12-35 mm lens but can't decide which of the other two to take. I am leaning toward taking the 7-14 mm lens because we will be visiting large cathedrals and also there will be opportunities for wide scenics such as the "white cities" and the Mediterranean coast. Another option would be to take the 12-35 mm and 35-100 mm and also my 25 mm prime instead of the larger 12-35 mm. Any ideas on this? I think I know how some of you will respond - Suck it up and just take them all!

My best travel lens is a 24-720 mm lens attached to my Sony DSC-HV50 pocket camera. Fantastic results in the palm of my hands. Does everything and the pouch attaches to my belt. Case closed.

When in Madrid in the '90's we had school girls in UNIFORM bump and try to pick us. Also, evening street encounters were not uncommon. Over the chest is the way to carry in the Urban world.

On the photo side--Spain is fabulous. It is very bright, but many of the sights are inside and kinda dim. So, the 25mm f1.8 would be good. The cathedral stained glass windows are fabulous, but to isolate them might take some reach also the detail on the exteriors are worth of closer inspection, but may be 50+ feet off teh ground. . Go on line to see some Spain Travel stories and make up your own mind.

I would take the 7-14 and 35-100. You can use your feet and the 7-14 to zoom in on most of the subjects you would otherwise use the 12-35 for. And that will probably give you better pics with less crowd in the foreground than if you were using the 12-35.

Let me know how your trip to Spain turns out (photographically). Going to Spain/Portugal Douro river trip in Aug/Sept hopefully with a new Olympus omd1 and spending an extra four days in Madrid, Granada and Seville. HAVE A GREAT TRIP. Look forward to your photos!

Thanks to everyone for the excellent food for thought! My current thought is that I will take my wide angle 7-14, the 35-100, and my 25 mm 1.8 prime. The ultra-wide angle is one of my favorite lenses for the scope and perspectives it gives and I believe I will use the longer zoom for details and people. The 25 mm prime should be good for the low-light interior and walk-about photos. If I decide to lighten further, I will probably sacrifice the 35-100. By the way, I am well on the plus side of 70 and I have a lot of arthritis issues. I love the mirrorless camera system for myself but still go as light as I can, especially when going on day-long jaunts.

Definitely the 7-14mm. And take table-top mini-tripod for long exposures inside buildings. I would drop the 12-35mm. You can move closer with the 12-35 or further away with 35-100mm an capture everything you would capture standing still with the 12-35mm.

I don't know if these will help, but I went to Spain in 2016. My photos of that trip are here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/8712554@N02/collections/72157667440330363/.

If it were me, I'd take the 7-14mm, 25mm prime and the 35-100mm.

The gaps in between those lenses are no problem.

The fast prime can come in handy in low light situations... and the wide angle for scenics. I always like to have a telephoto, too, for portraits and any wildlife.

David,
Looked at ALL of your photos. Lots of terrific shots. Thanks for sending. Gave me some good ideas on where to focus our time there.

Thank you for the compliment. My FlickrĀ® postings are not as selective as ones I do here because they primarily serve to document my travels. I'm glad you found them useful.
