Hi all,

In preparation for the August solar eclipse, I'd like to start gathering equipment and practicing for this awesome event. I plan to shoot with a sigma 150-500mm lens on my Nikon D3300. I think the size I need is 86mm. I was wondering if anyone knew of a spot on the internet where I could get the appropriate filters? If I have to get a standard white-light filter, that will do, but Im hoping for the one that gives the sun that awesome orange glow through the lens...I think it's baader material? Im having trouble finding them online. Anyone know where to look?

Thanks,

Nick

Go to the NASA website and read all the information there including or especially the eye safety data. I personally do not want you to become the first blind UHH photographer. They also have all the information for filters and some of the suppliers. And there is an astrophotography section on this site. These two spots should set you up for a safe eclipse viewing experience.

The NASA site is https://www.nasa.gov/. Once there, search "eclipse" and just poke around finding everything you every wanted to know about eclipses.

If supplies sell out in the U.S. (they often do when an event like this comes around, not just in the U.S.) find out what you need and buy abroad. The internet is useful for this.
We won't be seeing anything of this one so I suspect our stocks will be regular price and available.

Last time we had one (partial) I used Bader solar film pulled taut across the lens hood and secured with an elastic band. Just about acceptable but it was a very poor showing so I didn't keep any.

Go to www.thousandoaksoptical.com, they sell threaded solar filters similar to a Skylight or UV filter. They are in Kingman, AZ. I've had good luck with their filters.

Have you thought of upgrading your camera to the D500? Or a D750?
