I use a Black Rapid strap attached to the foot of the lens. It's not that hard to carry. I also DO carry a tripod. Get a carbon fiber Gitzo tripod with a gimbal head. They are light. Put padding on the legs so that when it's on your shoulder it is comfortable to carry. Listen, my 500mm lens with camera etc. weighs 13.8 lbs and the tripod is about 5.1 pounds and the head is about 2 lbs. That's about 20 pounds. Many people hike or backpack with 40-50 pound packs. It's no big deal. Really!

One option is to get a collapsible wagon. I do use one once in a while when I know the site well and the trail well.

Which Gitzo tripod do you use.
Thank you

I am happy with this lens case: https://www.amazon.com/Torkia-TL-7040XTm-Fitted-Tamron-150-600mm/dp/B00NJU97KM

My sigma600 came with a case, I put longer straps on and tried that, Not happy I removed everything from my camera backpack and put the 600 in there, It didnt fit.
Then I put it and everything I would need in a regular hikers backpack, wrapped 1 inch foam around the inside, That works better but Im still not happy.
If Im hiking less than a mile, I carry the camera and lens in my arm. Its ok walking out, but it gets heavy when your coming back. I'm thinking I need a Sherpa.

Which brand backpack and model # to take two camera bodies with 55-250mm lens, and with 18-135mm lens plus the large tamron lens? Thanks!

While not a backpack, this is the case that I bought. It is long enough to hold my D500 + battery grip + Tamron 150-600 G2 + 1.4TC with the lens hood. The bag opens quickly with ganged zippers which run the length of the top. I paid $200 including freight from B&H. It is very well built.

It has a shoulder strap, and rails of some sort along the bottom for attachment to a cart. I do not know if there is a backpack attachment. I suspect there is, and I've seen them, but I looked at so many options I cannot remember what accessory goes with what brand.

My Gitzo is a Series 3 Systematic. They don't make my exact model any longer since they have made improvements since mine. Mine is a 4 section tripod, and I added the center column to other for extra height. Then I added the LensCoat leg wraps to it too. I have the Benro gimbal head.

Jeep daddy sounds like some great advice. 20lbs wow you must be in great shape. The idea of securing a strap to the foot of the lens sounds like a great idea as I do have an optech dual strap and single strap. .Do you lug the camera with lens on your tripod too sometimes? can you send me an image of the blackstrap secured to the foot of the lens, Thanks and have a good one!!

No, I wouldn't say I'm in great shape. Getting old and my feet hurt all the time. I also have 3 herniated discuss in my low back. I'm just careful. Yes, sometimes I do carry my camera on the tripod. It depends on what I'm shooting. For instance if I'm photographing Grebes in a pond, I use the tripod. I will probably stay in that one spot for hours.

I'll try to upload a couple of photos now. I'm using my phone and I'm not sure I can do it. I'm leaving early in the morning to cross the Mojave desert in my Jeep. I won't use the tripod, but I'm bringing the 500mm lens in case I see some Bighorn Sheep.

I attached the strap to my 100-400 lens foot but it's that same on any lens with a foot. I use a Swiss Arca plate and clamp system for fast interchangeability.

thanks jeepdaddy for the photo of your strap hooked up to your lens. I believe I will go with the mentioned case that the 150-600mm lens is customized for and then hook it up to my optech shoulder strap when on the go with it.

How does one lug this large lens in the field,ie if you are walking a mile or more. Type of case one would recommend ie if taking a few camera bodies . Lugging it on the tripod is out of the question as you are looking for a tragedy to happen. I have been experimenting using the lens on my vanguard bh200 ball head, but it does not seem like I can maneuver the lens quick enough to catch a bird in flight or just taking off. Would a gimbral head be the answer and could one recommend a gimbral that does the job(for 5lbs.) but will not break the bank. Thanks!!

Backpack most definitely, check out Tamrac.com. I have an older Expedition Backpack and camera case that has traveled far and wide with me. Both hold two bodies and a few lenses no problem. Tamrac has good and derverse selection of backpacks, cases, utility belts and accessories

I use a Cotton Carrier to lug my Nikkor 200 - 500mm f5.6 + Nikon D500 for up to 7 hours a day. I also bought a Lensmaster RH1 gimbal for my monopd and carbon tripod. It works a treat. I hang my Sirui 204S hybrid monopod off a D ring, which I sewed onto my Cotton Carrier. It leaves both hands free when walking.

Personally I don't go for the $700 to $1000 Gimbal heads, I have the carbon fiber MOVO that you can buy on Amazon for about $200 after purchasing it I have read a bit here on the Hog where the Aluminum Movo was compared to the Nest, I think that MTShooter disassembled both heads and he liked the Nest. All I can say is that my MOVO is great so far, turns and pivots with no effort whatsoever. I believe that both heads are rated for 30 pounds. I don't know how a gimbal is going to help you when you have to trek a mile or more to your shooting spot, I would think that your problem is the big lens that you want to mount to that gimbal head. I did buy a new heavier Arca Swiss plate for my bigger lens than the one that came with the MOVO head.

A case for the 150-600 is an interesting issue. The problem I'm having isn't the lens...it's the lens hood adding an extra inch to the diameter!! But without the hood...dang!

You can buy a smaller metal hood and not use the plastic OEM without problem - especially if you are on a crop frame camera .......
