Howard- Wonderful, wonderful set! Where were they taken? My wife and I went with friends to Grand Island Nebraska in March to see the migration of 400,000 of them from a blind, but never got this close. HenryB

A good set.
Just curious. What are those white spheres that look like oversized golf balls?

Great, thanks for sharing this with us. Plan on visiting Othello, Wa to see sand hill cranes soon.

What I found was "snuggled up close" was an understatement! As soon as the parent
sat down, the colts were burrowing into the feathers ... they climbed in and under,
The whole thing took less than 10 seconds .. and they were gone!!

Very interesting, Thank you for the time you are taking to include us all.

Even though cranes walk through our yard every year at about this time, I never saw this. Great set, and thanks. I've wondered what they did.

I have always wondered the same question....where do they sleep after walking around all day? Thanks so much for the beautiful and educational pictures!

Some are golf balls, there might still be the remnants of the eggs - The nest is on a golf course and I think the cranes collected them.

They were taken on a golf course in Florida. I would love to see 400,000 !!! As for getting close; the birds are used to golfers and golf carts. If you approach them (the birds) they will casually walk away. BTW, their "casual walk" covers a lot of ground very quickly. If you have been following this series, you know that when I find the family I don't try to get close. I sit down about 30-40 feet and the family comes over to me. The parents have seen me a lot and know me. I was taking photos during about half of the incubation period (approx 30 days) and I always let them know I was there by making a kissing sound. When I go over now, I make that same sound - the parents know the sound and come over with the colts. The colts give me a looking over too. When a Sandhill Crane walks over to me and I am sitting on the ground ... that bird is quite imposing!
