If you haven't seen the SCOTTeVEST, it's worth a look. It looks nothing like a photographer's vest, but it can hold lots of stuff without looking ridiculous. Great for traveling.

Also discourages pick pockets with the zipper pockets in in side. I have two of them

Do they get hot in the summer if you use them outdoors? Hot like in south texas...

Yes, it is. The thing is, it looks like a nice vest, but it comfortably hold a lot of gear.

I don't recall being bothered by heat in the summer, but wearing an extra layer of anything would increase the discomfort level on a hot day. I wouldn't use this for a professional shoot. A regular photographer's vest would probably be better for that. This is more for transporting and having everything handy when out exploring and shooting. Although it resembles a down vest, it definitely is not.
