I have the Vello battery grip on mine and have not had any issues with it,
but if you have the funds I think I would go with the Nikon battery grip...If had to do it again I would save up and buy the Nikon B/G

I have tried 3rd party grips and found that they function well, but have had the inset for the tripod bolt will loosen and make them worthless for using on a tripod. I recommend the Nikon brand, as I have never had that problem with the Nikon brands. The least expensive option would be to carry a spare battery in your pocket, this system works well for my wife, as she does not like the added size that a battery grip creates on the camera body.

I would echo the advise - go with the Nikon grip - I also have had Mieke grips, and while they were cheap, they were, well, cheap :) One of the real issues I had with a Mieke was that the green light on the camera would flash on and off constantly with the camera off and just sitting - like the battery was connecting and disconnecting - which it probably was.

I always worried about the build quality of the Mieke, it felt light, which probably meant that it was 99% plastic with very little metal backing it up inside.

I broke down and bought a Nikon grip which is definitely NOT cheap in any way. :)

What impressed me was the internal magnesium skeleton, just like the D7100. It also fits perfectly, matches the camera finish exactly and the electronics connection is tight, no more green light flashing all the time.

I use a Meike grip on my D750, and it is excellent. Fit , finish and functionality are great. I previously only bought Nikon grips, but at the current rate you could purchase 4 Meike's and still spend less than 1 Nikon grip.

I bought the Nikon grips used on eBay for a lot less than the price when new. Have them on both my d7000 and d7100. Fit and functionality are superb. I read too many negative things about non-oem grips

I have the MB-D15 for my 7200. Bought it mostly for the vertical grip feature. (for 7100 as well). I love it. Well made, rock solid mount. Comes with an EN/EL-15 battery tray, and a battery tray for 6 AA cells. A little trick, there's a white protective cover over the male connector on the on the battery grip. Where you put so as not to loose it? There's room in the EN/EL-15 tray for the cover. Does not interfere with closing and locking the tray. You'll never loose it. It's not cheap, but go for the Nikon.

I played with two clone grips and they were horrors, the tripod mount broke on each. Finally broke down and bought the nikon one for my d800. Best decision.

That was always my worry with a Mieke grip on my D7100, I was worried that it would fall off the tripod with a heavy lens on it - I would rig up a safety cable just to be sure it would not fall to the ground - glad I replaced it with a Nikon grip too ;)

I have used Vello grips on my Nikons (D5000, 7000 and now 7200). I know folks say they don't hold up, but I've never had a problem. I've used them on tripods and with my CB flash bracket without slippage or having them loosen up. Maybe I'm just lucky but so far, so good.

"A good grip" you want. Then only go for the factory grips.

(I use Pentax but it's similar on other brands too.)

Factory BG: (BG is about five years old and the camera has about 40,000 clicks. ???)

1) Works as well as when it was new.
2) Lettering is near perfect.
3) BG is gasketed and has water resistance built into it.
4) Price was around $175 when new.

3rd Party BG: (BG was about three years old and that camera has about 35,000 clicks. ???

1) Electrically broke at around two years.
2) Lettering wore out so bad I could hardly tell what it originally indicated.
3) I've never seen a 3rd party BG with any kind of gasketing or water resistance.
4) Price was around $50 when new. True, I could get several of these for the same price as a factory unit but I need something reliable that I can trust right now, not something that needs to be replaced often.

From now on I'll look into factory BG's.
