I would just be guessing, but I think with longer exposures you should be able to capture the cliff sides and river as well as the stars/Milky Way.

You might try the Fisher Towers area. It is about 22 miles up the Colorado River and off the road to the east.

I plan to photograph the Fisher Towers late in the afternoon as we arrive from Grand Junction, but will go back to Castle Valley the next day. Anything in particular you had in mind as a foreground for night shooting? I can't remember whether the 'Priest and Nuns' is close enough to the road to stand out in a super wide angle shot. As I recall, I used a zoom on it previously.

I have never tried a night shot there, but they might work as a side frame for a stars shot.
