Hi All

I have used external Drives for storage for years and exchange them every 3-4 years for I know they degrade. My 2 year old Western Digital has lost its identity as a drive, storage peripheral and I cannot convince it that it is not a computer

This Drive hold nearly 500K of photos ~10 years of work

Any ideas

Drives do not deteriorate; they just go down. Replacing them every few years is nothing but wasteful. You are doing it all wrong. Instead, back them up by having another drive storing the same stuff on it. When one goes down, then you replace it and copy the data over to it from its other drive with the info on it. This way, you are not wasting money by replacing a drive years before its time is up and you won't run into the dilemma you now have.

Mark, you are so right. I hesitate to post sometimes because most of the responses I get have nothing to do with what I am asking. Case in point. I listed that I was looking for a Olympus OM1n or 2n and I got answers ranging from the advantages of one over the other to someone telling me that he had both but they were not for sale.

Thank you for that response, I hope I am not being a PIA, It's my feeble attempt to make UHH a better forum.

If you have a windows or linux machine that you can run the recovery software on, get SpinRite at GRC.com for $89 with 30 day guarantee. I have used it for years for drive maintenance and recovery. If the drive is spinning, SpinRite can probably see it. Use option 2, it may run for hours.

I've had good luck with IsoBuster, a data-recovery utility which I used on a number of CDs / DVDs which all-of-a-sudden couldn't be read, also at least a couple of USB flash drives. It's supposed to work equally well on hard drives (quote from their website): "IsoBuster has been designed to recover data from all possible Hard Drives, including devices that behave like Hard Drives but are really Solid State Memory, such as SSD Drives." They have a trial copy you can download.

Congratulations.
Now go out and spend another hundred or two and get some backup drives and make sure everything is duplicated or triplicated.

Good for you. Many ways to backup data or entire drive, including operating system. Be diligent and consistent. Many (here) are willing to offer suggestions. I am too.
