Most of the post here are saying you need a passport to ENTER Canada, which is false if you are driving .By air or boat, I would say it would facilitate the process. Now to get back into the U.S is another issue. It would be advisable that if you want to return, it might be best to get one.
On a recent ship cruise we needed a passport to get in both ways.
I cross into Canada frequently at the Buffalo entry points. They always ask for a passport and then want to know why you are entering Canada. The best response that gets you in without any further questions is, "I'm going to the casino!"

Of the 70,000 members here, someone must have crossed from the USA into Canada. Was a passport required? I read online that I would not need a passport, but when I asked about getting one at the post office, the woman said I would need a passport to enter Canada. I should have kept mine current. If I get a new one, it will cost me $150.
Jerry, it's our own country that is the jerk about getting back in and it has been that way at least since the early 70's. So if you will be required to have a passport, it'll be for getting back home at the very least.
A special Michigan driving license will get you over and back. Went around Lake Sup. last fall.
As far as I know you do need a passport.

If you have an Enhanced Driver's Liscense (contains a chip) you can drive back and forth. To fly or on a regular license you need Passport.
Yes, we drove to Niagara Falls and needed it.

I live in Vermont and go to Canada frequently. The enhanced drivers license is the least expensive option. Returning to the U.S. is easy, but doing so on a holiday can be bad since lines can be miles long.
If you get a new passport, take your own photo. The photo's they take of you are horrible, you look dead. The camera they use has no adjustments.
I used to live in Alaska and have traveled through Canada many times. You do need a passport. BC stands for bring cash, lol. Have fun and enjoy your trip. There are lots of things to see and photograph.
In 2013, our chorus went to Toronto to attend a convention. You either need a full passport or there's a cheaper version just for a few countries, like Canada and Mexico. It's a pass of sorts. But since 2001 you need a passport to travel to Canada. Also, if you have new electronics or cameras that you're taking, you can obtain a form to list your items and stop by the US Customs on your way to Canada to have it stamped. This is so you don't have to prove, once coming back to the US, that you didn't buy the items in Canada during your trip.
