Good Morning
My name is Ivy Taylor.
I am in the early stages of photography. I have taken classes at the art institute and a semester at a Community College. I have been using a Canon Rebel 3i. I wanted to upgrade to another camera. What canon camera would you suggest. I have had my camera for about 5 years but really started working in manual the last two years. Open for suggestions. I was thinking about the 70 or 80D. Thank you

Welcome to the forum. I won't comment on the type of camera because I'm a Nikon user but you should get others that will give you a hand on this issue.

I changed from the earlier model Rebel Ti3 to Canon Rebel Ti6 I am very pleased with this camera. Changed to the rebel model because of the weight it is much lighter then my Canon EOS 7D Mark2 and the EOS 5D Mark2. Both are great cameras but just to heavy for me on trips.

80D has slightly better IQ in low light. More focal points and an interval capability (time lapse work etc) and higher resolutuon (24 vs 20mp) Net: Is the 80D worth $200 more?
I have the 70D but would not sell it to upgrade. If I did not own either...I would try to get the 80D. I usually make a decision based on AF and low light capaility as the deciding factors...but thats me. 80D is better on both fronts but not enough to make me upgrade from 70D
Both will offer more capability than what you have now especially in video. The 70D was a gamechanger for video.
No bad choice here. If $ are a concern. Get a 70D refurb. Enjoy!

A lot depends on your budget. As suggested earlier, refurb is a safe route if you use a reputable vendor. Canon USA and KEH are two such vendors.

I too am new to photography and took a couple of courses at our CC as well. I'm a couple of years into it and having a blast! When deciding on which camera I wanted, my main consideration was the primary subjects I'm interested in shooting. I also knew that I would buy only one camera outfit (body, lenses etc.) and wanted a camera that I could graduate to as I learned more. In my case, my main interest is wildlife/birds/landscapes. Of course I want to photograph the usual stuff like portraits and family events, but just about any camera/lens can do that. For wildlife/birds I need a camera and lenses to capture animals in motion and birds in flight. Landscapes aren't as particular. Sports need a fast camera for runners and catching balls in action etc. After doing my research I decided on a Canon 7D Mark II. It is definitely more of a camera than I need, but it has so many possibilities and options that regardless of where my interest takes me in the future, I will have a camera that will accommodate just about anything I desire. What exactly does your camera 'fail' to do..? Then look at the specs of your two choices to see which would be the most advantageous to you. Obviously, there will be many improvements across the board with both cameras, but what exactly do you need.....?
Sometimes the choice of upgrading is more an emotional need than physical 'lost' opportunities. (it could also be that other bits of kit need upgrading instead or as well)
With all your training, I would think that you are best placed to make that decision.

two questions.
1 are there new features that you feel you really need?
2 are there things you are doing now, that your t3i can't handle.
if the camera was good 5 yrs ago, then it's still good today. just older. I have a number of older used cameras that I use on a regular basis.

I wonder what you mean by working in manual. If you mean you want to do everything in manual, also focusing, then you have to get a mirrorless camera. If you are only doing your camera settings in manually and not focusing manually then you can buy any camera you want that has M on the dial.
In regards to mirrorless cameras you do not have many options if you must buy Canon, it is only the Canon EOS M in a few variants that you can buy and even that is not a good option as they do not have a viewfinder.

Welcome to our forum!
You'll probably want to stay with Canon, and you have lots of choices. Read some comparisons when you narrow your choices. Don't aim too low. I hate to see people say they are looking for a "starter camera." Do they plan to keep it for six months and then get another one?
Read comparisons and specs, and decide what features are important to you.
