Now try a converter of a different manufacturer. Take two pictures with the two teleconverters at the same time of the same subject and lighting conditions. What are you trying to prove? You will probably find that both teleconverters will give the same results. Why is so many picture takers are attempting to take pictures as far away as possible? Just a waste of time and money.

Did you calibrate the camera with and without the teleconverter? If not, calibrate both and try it again.

You'll need to adjust the AF Fine Tune for that lens and TC combination with what ever camera you are using with them. It should make a big difference.

There are three Nikon 1.4 TCs. Have you mentioned which you used?

I would do some more testing before I returned the TC. You need to be much closer to your subject.

I recently purchased the Nikon 200-500 with the 1.4 converter and was disappointed with the results. I returned the converter and exchanged the lens twice. The third one focuses much better than the first 2. I suspect some quality control issues with this lens

lol, yep it is #2, I spent $500 for a teleconverter that doesn't even come close to matching the photoshop enlargement to the same size magnification. Unless I can discover something I did wrong to cause it I'm going to get a refund and be happy with a 500mm reach. I knew the photos would be softer with a tc, but not that much!

Yes, but the first shot is soft too and all the TC did was enhance the problem of soft focus. Have you done a "fine tune" on both the lens alone and also with the TC attached? How warm was it? Maybe you should try your testing early in the morning. I've seen great shots with that TC.

I agree.

The Tamron 150 to 600 G2 lens plus the 1.4 TC work very well together. Yes, pixel peeping will reveal some loss of detail when using the TC, but part of that could be compensating for the 1 F stop light loss of the TC. Note that the 1.4 TC (G2) that Tamron makes only works with the 150 to 600 lens. The two were designed together, and do not work with other lenses. I think that is a better approach than "one size fits many". Of course, that's not an option if you already own other lenses.

There are only a few Nikon lenses that are worth the purchase price. And Tamron, Sigma and Tokina are working diligently to change that at half the price.

I also do not buy into the logic that only Nikon knows how to build a lens for their camera. By this logic you should only buy a camera from the manufacturer of the sensor. I bought a Nikon because Tamron doesn't build bodies.

Times are changing. If you don't research new products you might overpay for less. I also would not make a purchase decision based on one photo. Too many variables. Rent first, or buy and return.

Looks like motion blur to me.

So right, nothing is in focus and the SOOC shot the TC looks better.

I just received a Nikon 200-500 and a Nikon 1.4 teleconverter and tested them today on a extremely long distance shot of a Great Blue Heron. Using a tripod I took one series of photos without the teleconverter and another set with it. Camera settings on both were f/8 and both were taken at approximately the same time, under the same lighting using a tripod. The only pp done was a small amount of color correction and a heavy 1:1 crop. Then I enlarged the photo that was taken without the teleconverter to 140% in photoshop (a 1.4 software enlargement) to make the subjects same size in both photos.

Can anyone guess which was done using the teleconverter?

I have a tamron 2x converter which I use on my d7000 and fx 70-210 mm with perfect focus. It did take some practice and you cannot use filters

Actually, after downloading, they both look soft to me, and the TC just makes it worse. The EXIF data shows 1/200 sec exposure on #2 which seems way too slow when shooting at 700mm. Why not do an MAF adjustment and reshoot the test at a more appropriate shutter speed - say 1/500 to 1/1000 before deciding.

Almost look like there's movement in the second image, either the bird or you. You didn't say what your shutter speed was. Having a subject that far away then trying to do an evaluation of the lens and converter is a bad approach in my opinion. Find something closer with fine detail, not a moving subject. I don't know whether you have used long lenses or not, but practice makes perfect. I use canon products so cannot comment on the quality of Nikon, however I do almost all of my shooting with 1.4 converter on a prime 600mm on a full frame camera. I would not leave home with out the converter. I am very happy the image quality and you can check out my posts if you like.

I had the same experience with the Canon 1.4 series III. Cropping was sharper for me as well.

You may or may not get some improvement from micro adjusting. I think some of the members will have success stories but I am really not surprised...
