So are you saying that it is the Newbies fault they are getting rude responses to their questions?
Is that what I said? Anybody, anybody who portrays themselves in a manner that can make readers wary of their intent is susceptible to being ignored or treated poorly, rightly or wrongly. We don't have the benefit of facial expressions or intonations with written medium, but instead put forth statements that can be easily construed. Perhaps that will more clearly state my thought.
Similar. The one I imagine would include threads that would succinctly explain the crop question, dof, etc., all basic photographic questions as well. Searcher def. was on to something.

This is what you posted. "Sometimes ones perceived attitude enhances the probability of poor responses." We are talking about Newbies questions. I asked a clarifing question to your statement.

One problem is that the people that have the answer may never see the question. Is it better to get the answer even if the price is humiliation? It's a tough call.
One of the biggest problems for newbies I've seen is when a presumed expert replies with a terse 3 or 4 word reply that makes no sense to a newbie. Those people should just not bother because they do nothing to help anyone especially with a couple of misspelled words, more especially if those misspellings are acronyms.
I would not want to depend on any open forum if I was new to photography. It takes a while, even with a bit of experience, to determine who are the real experts and who just likes to hear themselves talk. There are often conflicting opinions with no way for a newbie to know which is correct. A forum is a place for discussion first and foremost. It can be a lot of fun and somewhat educational, but not to be confused with a learning center.

Frequently Asked Questions and Answers at
http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/s-106-1.htmlUnfortunately, there is no method of organizing threads in this section. They are posted in order as received. Only factual information is allowed in this section; no opinion allowed. Some members disagree, but that is their opinion.
Best method of review is to start on last page (first threads covering most basic questions), and advance forward, towards most recent subjects.
Thanks for the reminder about the FAQ section, Doug. I used to make regular use of it when I first joined and then somehow just got away from using it. Going back to it tonight.
I agree totally. I'm fairly new to this site, and have wanted to ask a few questions. However, after I see other being berated I choose not too. In fact I was seriously thinking of looking elsewhere for another photography forum that is more friendly.

This is actually one of the friendliest photo forums. The majority of the people here try to be helpful. If you see that someone is a little too aggressive you can add them to your ignore list. This should keep them from responding in a thread that you start.
Try it for a while, you might like it.

So true. You want major snarkiness? Go on over to the forums at
http://www.dpreview.com . It's a minefield of insult bombs.

Thanks for reminding us of this section, Mad Mike!! It looks like it has a lot of the information that I would like to have seen in an "index" that I suggested previously. I would recommend that all newbies check this section out. I haven't been there in awhile but I'm going to spend some time there now to see everything that is there.

I politely answered your question and thank you for helping me.
BTW "we" were discussing varying aspects...
Okay, since I am a newbie here, I'll chime in.
Firstly, I like it here. People are generally friendly and helpful.
Secondly... The forum is not easy to navigate. The layout is (for me) counterproductive.
I am shown the busiest / new threads... but not which sections have new posts or replies.
I prefer having clearly defined sections / areas, and then drill down in those.
Not really doable here, so I miss tons of stuff I'd probably find interesting, or could even help with.
It makes things easier to find and would help us newbies immensely (and stop asking the same question over and over...)
But if there is a way to have a different layout shown here, and I haven't found it, please let me know. :)
