Have been in a light airplane and wind is very difficult as stated above. I would take an awesome point and shoot, like the Sony RX100V and enjoy the ride. July will find me on a boat watching a lava flow hopefully; not sure what I will use either.

I have an old slide taken from a 9 passenger plane of lava. Not in very good condition now as it was taken in the early 70's.

I've never heard of a plane made of lava!

We spent February on the Big Island and had the opportunity to view the lava flow from the Kalapana side. It is approx 8 miles round trip out to the viewing area. We elected to go with Kalapana Culture Tours. We did the ride and bike which consists of them taking you and the bikes two miles out to gate #2 from there, you ride your bikes the remaining two miles to end and then do a short hike across the Lava to the viewing ropes. When you come back, you call them at gate#2 and they come pick you up. We got there late afternoon and set up our tripods right at the ropes. We ate the dinner we brought and then watched the sunset go down over the Lava fields. Once it got dark, the show began! Here is the link for the tour. You can rent from them right at the parking lot leading to the gate.

On the big island early feb and did the doors off flight over the Kilauea lava flow into the sea. A 300mm ( we used 28/300 and 70/300) did fine. Lots of vibration and 100+ mph air stream outside the door opening would make a longer lens problematic. Pilot only made 3passes each side- maybe 15 sec each- shoot fast! Hell of a view though!

Nice photo @ Can you post the full size and settings? (Looks like a screenshot from your lightroom desktop.)

Great camera. Only pro P&S that exists. Cost more then mid-range DSLR! Wife would kill me if I bought more gear. Have a bad case of GAS (gear acquistion syndrome). .... on 2nd thought... :-)
