My mother painted pictures so my walls got pretty full long ago. I would guess that I've taken something like 150-250K pictures through the years. I have maybe 3 of them on the walls or in small stand-up frames. I have probably printed about 200. Most of them are long gone.

The ones I print don't last that long since sunlight fades them fairly quickly unless they're on the shady side of the house. But the living areas are on the sunny side. And I don't care to have piles of photos just taking up space. So many of the photos see service as screen savers. That way they get viewed without having to print/store them. And the screen saver doesn't fade in sunlight.

I actually print quite a bit and am always amazed at folks who say they never print their images. Pictures were intended to be printed, I think, and seen!

I agree and I too print a lot of pictures, as I see this still as a part of the pictue-taking-process ( a picture starts when you push that shutter button and it ends with the print in your hands)!

When I was printing 4x6 of virtually everything I shot (first two years of digital), a friend "re-cycled" them at nursing homes, daycare and other places where there are crafts programs. Mine were mostly flowers and cute critters; this suggestion may not be applicable to all

That's a really good idea!

My mother painted pictures so my walls got pretty ... (show quote)

I have pictures hanging (mostly in full sun)for more than 20 years, and not 1 ever faded, even just a bit!

The color prints done with a photo process last longer. What comes off my printer fades quickly. The oil paintings also last longer (probably because the ink is much thicker).

For my personal use I print my favorites but they aren't hanging on the wall. I will show them to friends one at a time and talk about them as I do. My daughter's artwork is prominently displayed on our walls. For my customers I print what they order. To promote my business I have photo banners, metal prints, photobooks, etc, 16x20 and larger prints on display.

I probably print less now that I did when first learning. I am no longer a member of a club so have no 'need' or competition to service.
Of my images I keep about 10% the rest are deleted. Of those maybe 3 or 4 a year end up on the wall. (usually a couple of holiday pictures and the occasional 'outstanding' one.
When my consistency rate increases perhaps I will find a use for my prints.

I am so impressed by all the posts, and different applications. Time to spill here. On one staircase, I have seven 8x10 prints of our travels in Rome and Med, via cruise ship. On a short wall, I have four shots OF a cruise ship, different sizes, in wrapped canvas. Those constantly give us something to look forward to. Over our bed is my first venture in major wrapped canvas. From Florence, Neptune's Fountain, on a 60" by 48" tall wrapped canvas. On the opposite wall is a 36" by 36" of the pyramid on our one and only trip to Egypt. Something I just started, I bought a 12 frame callage, with 12 4x6 windows. I'm going to capture our two Pugs in different "situations".

For me, seeing each of these prints reminds me of the wonderful experiences shown in each. Now if only we had one of the very long and thin hall ways, as Trix has shown us. Thanks Trix. And power to Canon printers.

I plan to visit this thread a great deal over the next many days, and learn how more of you find unique ways to use your printed images.

First off, it is amazing how good images look printed. That being said, I have 8 images that I had printed onto metal by Bay Labs and a few dozen on paper that I rotate on a magnetic display board.

Like many of you I have many boxes of photographs from the film days and of course tons of slides. Since the digital age I still print many 8.5 X 11 and put them in frames that get recycled. I also create for myself and others slide show on DVD's with music. Pretty entertaining for those who are interested. Of course as mentioned there are the digital frames that rotate photos for the family to enjoy. However I also have a local guy who has top of the line printing equipment who does some printing and framing for me. mostly 20 x 30 or 24 x 36. You can do that with a full frame camera. I will attach a shot taken with my phone of my favorite photos on my wall. very sorry for the poor quality I took these a few months back to show someone with as a text message... the photo on the lower right is a poster I created for a local restaurant it actually won a local contest and was featured in the Queen city art gallery for 30 days...again sorry for the poor quality it is all I have available as I write this...

Hi I don't print my shots because I am a working photographer, ( that is I get paid to shoot), that is busy working for a living. My shots do hang on other peoples walls , albums or publications. I don't have family nor travel much. I do however paint from my shots. I don't value a photo print so I don't hang any on a wall. I have never sold a print. I have a file of shots, stored on my computer & Xternal drive, Ive taken that I can look at from time to time. I'm sure a hobbyist takes photos to make prints, but frankly I think mine would wind up in a draw, or somewhere in the house or attic.
I wish I had the interest to go out and take shots so that I can show off my work on my walls. If I were a hobbyist I could see showing off my work.

Marilyn, my wife, and I print very few compared to the number we take. Our biggest challenge will be selecting and printing for a small show

Although I have a few prints hung I have been primarily using digital displays with approximately 25 images on each.

One of my students asked a curious question. Of all the pictures captured via (a) DSLR and/or (b) cell phone, how many of those actually end up being printed and displayed on the wall? Of course, I would never exclude those who are shooting a SLR and film.

From my colleague UHH members around the world, as well as here in St. Louis, I'm really curious to hear the results.

My wife and I like books and artwork. We have a fair amount of wall space used to hang various types of artwork. Around 75% are photographs, some prints from established photographers, some from friends, some of our own.

We have quite a few more waiting to be framed. When we run out of wall we'll cycle them around. We can cut our own mattes, it's just time currently.

If you add in the books it is a huge number of printed photographs. Fortunately our house is light and airy, but easy to avoid direct sunlight on books and artwork.

We use screen savers, but very little other digital display technology.
