You're right. I have what works for me, you have what works for you.

Why complicate matters. If you are using LR, just use import and under Destination select "into sub-folder" and put in name and organize (either "into one folder" or "by date") then select the main folder.

Tomato! tomoto.

Personally I find LR to darn slow to go from camera into LR. This is one of few times I prefer to skirt LR. I know my LR directory structure such as ...pictures>2017 with individual named folders below. I know what is on my camera, whether one shoot or several shoots and create directories using the Operating system. I happen to use Windows. I then simply use windows explorer to place the pictures in the created directories. Explorer is quite fast and simple. I then go to LR, select import, make sure I'm pointing at 2017 and those added directories will show up. At this point the process is simply an add to the catalog with is fast. do the same with each.

Basically saying, in this case, separating the pictures before you import. LR will allow you do it also but it slower and frankly a PITA. :)

That's what I do. I have a program that makes it even easier, but it's all outside of LR. It also renames the files with useful names. Once they're in my folder structure they get imported to LR. From then on they don't get moved.

It's also possible to use a hybrid folder structure of descriptive names and then dates. I take most of my photos on trips so the top-level of my folder structure is by place (/Europe/Ireland/Dublin for example) and then I use LR to automatically (during the import process) sort the photos by date into subfolders (2011/2011-07-01 or 2015/09-15 for example) that are then placed underneath the /Europe/Ireland/Dublin.

I tend to recall photos by where I was at the time so this structure works very well for me. It's also easy to sort out photos taken in the same place from 2011 vs. 2015. I then keyword by subject matter such as churches, flowers, sunsets, beaches, etc. So I can very easily search for church photos from Dublin by filtering out all photos with the "church" keyword beneath the Dublin folder.

I also import directly into LR from my memory card as that saves a step. I haven't noticed any slowdowns using the method. If I have a card full of photos from different places, I simply select a subset of the photos on the card, import them to the desired folder and then go back to import, select a different subset and direct that to a second folder.
