Doing the family vacation in mid-September in Maine. We have the place in Surry off Newburry Neck Road and now looking to fill in the time slots with photography venues. I understand there are a lot of hiking trails in the area - any great ones ? Also looking for good shore areas with wilderness or lighthouses. Have aging in-laws coming with us so need to find some accessible places to take them which are also photogenic. Will be splitting time being a tourist and being a photographer but wouldn't mind being a tourist in a place where there are great photo ops. The less accessible locations will probably be just be me alone or with my triathlete wife. Any suggestions from Linda or others ?

Also, is this a dark sky area ? Seems to be in general but not sure specifically in/around Surry. Would love to do some astro-photography with a working lighthouse.

Thanks in advance.

Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay is a premier garden. I've been to gardens all over the world, but this is near the top of my list of favorites.

Be sure to travel out to Schoodic Point. This is north of Mt Desert Island across Mt. Desert Narrows. There is accessible rock coastline and a lot of possible photography. Like all places there be careful of the wet rocks which can be algae covered and "slicker than snot" that they used to say.

Even without Acadia, whale watches and the rest... Fresh Lobster from the boat to the pot to the plate can't be beat. I am dying to get back up there after 20 years just for dinner!
Oh, Canon 70D... yeah this was an answer to a photographic question! :)

Hi Ken,
I am a long-standing Maine lover and one of the places I stayed was near where you're going: Surry off Newbury Neck Road. You have great sunrises there. Mt. Desert with Acadia National Park is the unlimited possibilities place, and Schoodic Peninsula, which is still part of Acadia, is also not to be missed. Hiking trails everywhere. You can drive to the top of Mt. Cadillac for a panoramic view of everything. Enjoy!!

I haven't been to Bar harbor since my film days. I got some great shots from the mountain of Bar Harbor as a cruse ship was coming in. Many photo opps in the town.

If you time it right your can walk across the bar to Bar Island , climb to the top , and get pictures of the town from a different angle, did that a lot of years ago. You have about 2 hours or you get to wait 12 to get back.

I'd go somewhere else. I went to Bar Harbor for a vacation about two decades ago. It was the biggest tourist trap with the most money grubbing and unfriendly people I ever ran into, and I've seen more than half of the US plus Canada and Mexico. Bar Harbor reminded me of those creepy towns in a Stephen King novel. Sorry, but that's my experience. I could give a few examples but it would make my skin crawl. Best place I ever vacationed was at Lake Tahoe. Guadalajara was very nice. A nice spot in New England was North Conway, a little town in the White Mountains and close to Mount Washington.

North Conway ??? You must be joking!! North Conway is one long strip of Factory Outlets and motels. Main St is a parking lot during leaf peeping season. Good center for skiing in winter, but not very 'New England'.

And...if the significant other is bored with your photoism,
give her some cash and point her to Bra Harbor on Main Street...
Victoria's Secret, without the super models [of course ]

Hi Ken,
A couple of years ago my wife and I vacationed from Cape Elizabeth (Portland Head Lighthouse) to Boston. Not sure where Surry is in location to Cape Elizabeth. If it is near Portland Head it's worth the trip to visit. I could not tear myself away from there. Also the harbors... we found some great photo opportunities. Well we thought so. There seemed to be fishing docks and harbors every place we looked. Lots of lighthouses in the area as well. Buy a local map and it will tell you where they are. We would go back there in a heartbeat. Enjoy your vacation.

Any place that is popular is likely to be a "tourist trap" and you can meet unfriendly people anywhere. But some places are worth the trouble of that type of encounter. Acadia National Park is one of those places, Yellowstone Park another. The views and scenery are spectacular and photographic opportunities are plentiful. I am not fond of crowds, but sometimes they are unavoidable. When I went to Acadia National Park it was in October for the fall colors. It is considered the "off" season and hotel rates go down. There are still plenty of people, but not elbow-to-elbow, and there is plenty of space for all. When I went to Yellowstone it was September when it was starting to get cold there. Still lots of people, but I can imagine how many more there would be in the summer. The camping was still good, but we had our down sleeping bags against the cold nights. People would stop their cars in the middle of the road to look at the wildlife close to the road, but we were not in a hurry to get somewhere.

Perhaps you were simply unlucky in your encounters. Try going when it is not the peak season. Then the people who serve you in restaurants and hotels will not be so over-worked and the streets will be less crowded with tourists and with more locals. The locals in Maine are mostly very down-to-earth people who work hard and love where they live.

It has been a while since we were there but Moosehead Lake is the largest lake in Maine and lovely. There are many places to camp and hike...and ski.
Pemaquid Point has a beautiful lighthouse.

Boothbay Harbor was a lovely tourist trap at the time.
Would love a trip back sometime. Look forward to some pictures from there.
