The lens is a little heavy but I still have strong arms and hands... I have carried the Canon 40D camera with dual battery grip attached, the 70-200mm lens, and a loaded camera case for up to 3 hours at a time! The photographic results are worth the excellent weight of the glass! Just don't forget to change the switch setting from 1.4m to infinty to 2.5m to infinity when the situation warrants it. It lets you focus closer and increases focus speed under certain conditions.
