Yep! We played full-court basketball and volleyball in the hanger deck. When allowed, we even played flag football on the flight deck.

I envy all of you guys! My four years were spent at RTC Great Lakes, "A" school at NAS Jacksonville, and 3-1/2 years at NAS Brunswick. I had to take a job in aerospace to get overseas, 1-1/2 years in Vietnam. I never got to serve on a ship and have always regretted it.

Great shots, ibgrumpy! Which aircraft carrier was it? Our son served on the USS Kennedy.

USS America, CVA-66, 7/72 to 7/74, which included 6-months Yankee Station, Gulf of Tonkin. The America's flight deck is 90-feet above waterline, but on two occasions, we had swells breaking over the bow. I pitied the Destroyers and Escorts flanking us, because they would go over one, then under one.

.

Your last post appears to be a Fletcher class destroyer. I spent parts of '58 & '59 on the USS John Hood DD-655. Google her and you will see a very similar photo. When plane guarding for carriers we had a saying that when the carrier passed the word to "secure the pool tables" we were passing the word to abandon ship. Ahhhhh the good old days

Thanks for the comment. I was aboard the USS Kittyhawk at the time.

I was on the USS Black DD666 and did plane guard in the Pacific 1956-1961. I have a similar picture taken of the Black from the carrier! Love it!

I was a cook on the Sara (CVA-60). The good thing about taking on a big storm was the chow lines were much shorter, however there were other lines much longer.
