Excuse my ignorance, but why does a stills/portrait photographer need one of these? Thx!

To have a substitute background. When I took a cruise two years ago, the ship photographer had a greenscreen backdrop set up. You could get yourself photographed and then order images with you standing in front of the ship at dock, or in front of any number of famous port locations.

When you watch the weird guy (weather man). He is shot in front of a green background (key) the rest (images/maps/videos) are added live. The only difference in photography is that it is done after.

The chromakey is an unrealistic color that allows a fine selection w/o too much trouble. That selection is then pasted anywhere.

Do a google search to check how.

I think the green or blue screen backdrop is more useful for film or video than it is for still photography. I replace backgrounds all the time using a neutral grey backdrop and I find it easy to select the background, where the green or blue background sometimes shows along the edge of the selection and takes a more precise selection.

I agree 100%. For still photography a neutral gray is far superior to a green/blue screen. it is dark enough to extract light colors and light enough for dark colors and being neutral, there is zero color contamination.

You are correct but the chromakey background or suit cannot be found in grey. Also remember that the green used = 18% luminosity reflection* so changing the color to grey works just as well.
_______
* IF I recall correctly.

I use blue and green screen daily, would not leave home with out it. What I been using for over 5 years http://www.photography-lighting.com/green-screen-wizard-free-download.html lot of great info on youtube. Why use it take the back ground out and put another in in. My self I can't see why you would go some place for a back drop.
I use digital back grounds it buy on ebay and others on the web, I have 1,000s of them. I try to go out one day a week and photograph just for me and back drops.
Your never to old to learn just ask. www.bbnpb.com

The main reason that the Green Screen is used on TV as opposed to any other color is that it is a rarely used color for clothing.

I use a green screen when I shoot indoor portraits. It easily allows me to change out the background to anything the person may want. They can be outside in a garden or have some grunge background and then the background can be easily manipulated in any way without having to work about cutting the person out of the image.
Even if they just wanted some matte background, I'd have to have many different background styles & colors and have to change the background each time. The green screen allows a very quick and easy manipulation of the photo. This BTW is only for my enjoyment. I am not a pro. As a pro I might consider having more background styles on hand. Editing does add some manipulation time which as a pro, you don't want to spend time doing things like that but as an enthusiast, I enjoy it.
