There were trees along the drive in the cloud forest that had these buds (?) on them. The group of buds (flowers?) were quite large, perhaps about 7" in length. The individual little round things were perhaps 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch in size. None were opened beyond this point, and I don't know if they actually do open.
Reminds me of pokeweed (which is poisonous). But I've only seen poke weed with the berries.

Is it a tree? These were on trees.

I don't believe so, but some get to be very tall, like five or six feet.
You could try a low cost app called Flowerchecker. It's run by a group of botanists. Have found them very useful when I get stuck on a plant ID.
Medinella either magnifica or myrantha

I'll look into that. I currently use a thing called UBC Botanical Forum. It's free!
And I'll look into the UBC Botanical Forum. Thank you.
Love the colors, I have no idea, I don't think I have seen something like that growing out here.

Thanks, Mike. It's the colour that drew me to look. They are strange.
Sure looks like pokeweed to me and it is poisonous. When ripe the birds can eat the black berries but a no no for people.
