I currently am making the the same decision. I honestly can't imagine how the images coming from my D800 could be any better ! If I expose my RAW files correctly, add a touch of sharpening, and process correctly, the images are absolutely perfect ! I'll admit that a new processor would improve the high ISO a bit, but I really don't have much to complain about... I'm waiting for the new D8XX to be released later this year with the 5 generation processor and AF sysrem. If it's anything like the d500, then I'll buy one as soon as the bugs are are corrected... I still shoot my D300s on occasion, and have fought the urge to upgrade to the D500. I'd rather shoot a new D8XX with my 800 as backup.
BTW, I just read on Nikon Rumors that Nikon will be selling parts to a few select repair facilities who will mow service Grey Market D810 cameras, and thatbyou can purchase grey market d810 for just under $1800 !

I had a D750 and traded up to an 810. The only thing I don't like about the 810, it has been superb in every way.

I found the shutter mechanism so much smoother on the 810 than the 800. There were a lot of other improvements as well. I was glad I upgraded.

I have a D810, but never has the previous model, the D800. I have owned this camera since about April 2016 and am very happy. I bought it at the same time I bought my D5, trading in my D4s. I did realize a new version might be released soon and I will upgrade IF the new model has some feature(s) that would be helpful in my work. Presently, I believe the D810 to be a superb camera and very good for any subject except action sports. Best of luck.

I forgot about that improvement.....HUGE plus if you are shooting photos of speakers in meetings.
The shutter is a LOT quieter.
Now I don't feel so bad about not getting the 800e instead.

I'm a pro and I love the d810. It's so much lighter than my D5, very quiet and a great second/back up camera

I traded my D800 for a D810 a year ago. Photos are sharper and the colors appear richer, softer. The feel in the hand is much better, and the shutter appears quieter -- it doesn't clang when it goes off. For me, the trade up was well worth it.

I'm happy with my D810,but the D5/D500 Expeed5 processor and new focus system might be worthwhile enhancements for some, particularly for action shots. What I'm saying is the replacement model (someday) may be quite desirable.

I have the D800 and about a month ago I purchased a D810 which came with a battery grip the nikon one and cost $369.00 and some other things total $500.00 extra for $2500.00 at B & H love them. The D810 is definitely sharper because of the low pass filter not in this model. I am not sorry at all buying the camera, (LOVE IT). I was a little leery at first but took out of box put battery in and the very first photo was amazing and the rest is history as they say. I don't think you will be sorry if you purchase one of these.

I replaced the 800 with the 810 and agree with the other comments that the 810 images are sharper.
