Are teleconverters any good?

It's a lot cheaper than a longer lens. I use a Kenko 1.4TC, and that works fine for me.

Get the Canon Mk III from B&H, try it out and decide for yourself. If you don't like it return it.

Teleconverters definitely have their place and in many cases will provide better image quality than cropping. Best to take test shots and find out what you can realistically expect from yours in combination with the lens.
I was pleasantly surprised to find a 2x TC that yields a sharper image with my 300mm than cropping the lens-only image to achieve same subject size. That is the way to compare and evaluate a TC.
It makes no sense to leave a TC mounted on your zoom and just use it at any focal length but the longest one - I don't think anyone would do that, but just saying.

Check Regis photos on the UHH he uses TCs with great shots of wild life.

I have the II of the same lens along with a 1.4 extender on a 5dIII and it does well. Don't know about the older version.

So you are saying I would be stupid to use my 70-200 with 2x TC at 300mm but not at 400mm. That doesn't make much sense to me. Perhaps you can elaborate.

I think he means that long lens are not sharp at their longest focal lenghts.

I will be trying out the 1.4 miii this week end.
Micro adjustment will get priority for me to see if anything changes with what I have set with the lenses.
I'm assuming tolerances may affect sharpness but I haven't heard of anyone having any concern.

I own the Kenko 1.4 Teleconverter. I rarely use it. But, I have seen some excellent photos on this forum taken with a Canon 100-400mm lens. And paired with Canon's newest version TC. I noticed no degradation at all.

I shoot with a Sony G zoom and prime lenses, I mate them with both the 1.4 and 2.0 tc's. I get great images and auto focus with both they happen to be 2.8 lenses. with G and L lenses costing near 2 grand you don't expect to find flaws in those lenses.

Hi, go to Flickr and look up "DTT67" and then you tell me what you think of 1.4 and 2x extenders. You can use the Canon 1.4 III with your lens and it will work very well. My wife and me both shoot and we have 2 of the 1.4 III extenders and 1 of the 2x and we use the 1.4 a lot more often but at times it helps to have the 2X. You could use a 2X with your lens but you would have to use manual focus.

I use the Canon 1.4 iii tc with the 7d mark II using 2 lenses: the 100-400mm II and the 500mm. Because the zoom is a slower lens when zoomed to 400mm (f/ 5.6) it will use only the center points for focus, which makes it a little more difficult when shooting birds in flight especially when they fill the frame. I am not sure that it tracks as well. Or it may track the wrong part of the bird. Since I can move the focus points when using my 500mm, I get a higher percentage of keepers.
