Thanks for commenting. Colorful is the perfect way to describe Carnival. Almost visual overload when I downloaded the photos.

I know I will never make it there, so it's wonderful to see this beautiful place through your lens along with your narrative, Father Jack!

Yesterday was the carnival parade in LJ. Town was very crowded. Many people were dressed in costumes, mostly simple easy to put together ones leaning heavily on wigs, dark glasses, and pirate clothing. Much less cross-dressing than is typical of Halloween in the U.S. but, (sigh) there was one man dressed like a nun, a compulsion I will never understand. The weather was superb and everyone in a good mood. I was here last year for the Carnival but was much better prepared this year and wandered all over the place with the camera. Below is a sampling of what turned out to be a long and productive photo walk.

I enjoyed this fantastic set of the carnival parade. I was in Ljublijana when the country was still Yugoslavia. It was the last place our tour group visited after an extensive tour. I'll never forget the friendly people and the beauty of the country. Thank you for sharing these, frjack!

Thanks for the compliment. Am going to be off the grid for the next eight days on retreat but will be posting more from the carnival parade once I get back.

You're welcome and thanks for the comment. The people here are more than happy to share the meaning of the various customs. Very friendly but very non-touchy-huggy-feely. That is a good thing.

Thanks for the comments. LJ has changed quite a bit since you were here. Several of the guys in the community pointed out significant changes. One of the pedestrian, shopping, and eating areas had been a through road. Is now a charming cobblestoned district with no cars. Extremely clean. Can't say I've ever seen litter. Or garbage.

Oh yeah. Mrs. Trump's hometown, Sevnice, (Sew neets ah) is about a hour from LJ. Hope to get there at some point. Sevnice has a castle overlooking the town and sits strung out along a river. Photo ops for days from what I can tell. Eventually the family moved here to LJ, largest city in Slovenia with a population hovering around 280,000. By contrast, Maribor, the second largest city about 80 minutes north by car is 95,000. The village may be only 1000 or so. Total population of country is about 2 million.

Yes, this is the equivalent of Mardi Gras. The krof (what Poles call paczki) are reminisicent of beignets in New Orleans. There is much less public drunkenness and questionably appropriate behavior.
