When I was looking for some binoculars I choose Canon, with IS. It is amazing how well the IS will stabilize the image. Just press the button, and the image stops jiggering.

Cant beat the Steiner marine 7x50 for the money ($250) from B&H. Guaranteed for life, waterproof, very rugged and great in low light.

I'm too old and tired to put up with that sĀ„#t. Have a photogenic day.

Then simply move on to the next thread. No need ridicule the poor guy. So what if he wants to sit in his recliner and ask for help. Most of us don't mind helping and if we don't feel like it, we click on the little back arrow and look at the next thread.

So in the Chicago area, you went to, say, Lane Bryant and they didn't have a selection of binoculars. Obviously, you don't want advice, you just want somebody to place a pair of binoculars into your hand without any need for research. Does your cellphone, assuming the whitecoats trust you with one, have Google? You are the definition of the word "troll".

Seems to me you'r the Troll here. Get a life.

I don't know whether Swarovski binoculars fall in your price range, but they are superlative. I compared Nikon and Leica and thought they were both brilliant. I then tried a pair of Swarovski binoculars and they blew the others out of the water. I had no hesitation in buying a pair. They feature more than any other brand on wildlife documentaries in the UK. They are expensive over here, though.

Swarovski are the very best, none even come close. šŸ˜†

How the hell do you know that? Did you follow him around? A member asks a legitimate question and gets flamed. That kind of behavior is shameful!

I got a nice Nikon pair from Cabelas for around $250. 8X, fairly wide view, and a feature that helps viewing with glasses on.

I'm no expert on binoculars, but if I were going to spend $$$ on a set of binoculars, I would insist that they be image stabilized. Several years ago, we took a cruise to Alaska with our friends. One of our friends purchased Canon IS binoculars in Anchorage. They were absolutely amazing. Please consider this option. I think that you would be most pleased.

One more suggestion. Go to a store that has a large selection of binoculars. Also go when you have the last hour of daylight. That's when you see the difference in glass. Most glass will look good during the mid-day hours, but if you're hoping to view animals, the last hour of daylight is when they come out to feed and get water. I hunt, so this is prime time and good glass is important at that point. Same thing with a camera lens. Vortex is still the best bang for the buck :-)

REI is a good place to start as they usually carry several brands and the staff is pretty knowledgable. You want to try them as much as possible before buying. The difference between 8x and 10x is pretty small but can make a difference on how stable the image is when you're viewing--think telephoto lens and blurring of images. Do try to think how you will use them as that may well make a difference but as we age the more light carrying ability they have the more desirable. I got the REI brand 8x42 and used them on African safari and all over South America and they are a good balance between small and light enough to carry but big enough to hold steady. I am very happy with this configuration. Of course if you have other uses in mind you need to take that into consideration. Specially if you're on the water because then the movement of the boat will greatly affect how they preform. In general a good pair of binoculars is an excellent tool to take along.
