That seems kinda vague. "Equality of opportunity"? I think that's the problem with the situations in which many people find themselves - no opportunity. Let everyone have the same opportunities and do what they can. Being born into a wealthy family and moving into the family business doesn't even compare with the lives most people lead.

The key word you used is "most".
Most have equal opportunity.
I had a client who was poor, went to ASU lived in his van with his wife and is now a multimillionaire. Equal opportunity, worked hard, seized the moment and made it. You would be surprised at how many clients I have with similar stories. Starting from nothing and making it big.

Architect you are 100% correct. Lived in a neighborhood growing up where we all had the same amount. Nothing! All different backgrounds, religions, ethnicity etc. Those that studied and worked hard moved out and upwards. The shysters and slackers are still there on the dole and crying how unfair life is.

"Most" people do not have the opportunity to go to college.

By choice.
Grants and loans and state schools you have to choose not to go.

This is true about college. But there are other opportunities such as job availability. I know a young lady who wants the sun, moon and stars without working for it. Her mom purchased her a car for her 16th birthday. The young lady is always complaining about not having any gas for the vehicle. It was suggested she get a job for which to buy gas (There are lots of retail jobs available). Her reply, "That's not going to happen." Same as the kids in my old neighborhood. Work interferes with their fun and games.

I was told I was not good enough to go. Joined the Army as a grubt and saw college educated officers as dumb as a box of rocks and knew I could do better so went when I got out and did make it. $40,000 in loans, paid off in 4 years by personal sacrifice.

I think each of us can define success any way we choose; with work and determination there are going to be many opportunities to achieve that success. Obstacles are a certainty, but if they can't be circumvented, they may just turn out to be opportunities in disguise.

Jerry, in some cases, one has to make their opportunity. Most have that ability. Some don't take advantage of it.
