This old beauty was sitting at a small airport near me, waiting patiently after a fresh oil change. When I asked if I could photograph it, the owner/pilot said to fire away, and he offered me a ride when he had the time. He had flown in from the Fort Wayne area for a little routine maintenance. He's a member of the glider club that owns the airport. I might take him up on the ride, but you won't get me up in one of the gliders--no way!
Does anyone know how old this Piper might be? I forgot to ask.

Nice shots John. You really should try the gliders - being up there in the silence is like flying like a bird - So I'm told. Hahaha!!!
Nice shots, sweet bird. Notice the wheel pant and lights. It's been "modernized ...."
Yep, J3 Cub, an iconic airplane great for photography and off airport landings(bush flying).

John, nice photos of a great airplane. BTW, I've been up in a glider and did both aerobatics and flew it a bit myself. Lots of fun.

Both the gliders and this old plane use basic stick and rudder operations - pretty simple and pretty fun. I have been up in a glider a few times also. They let you ride in the front seat and have some time at the controls - pretty exciting! Generally gliders are extremely safe (the stall speed is about 48 MPH - they don't go very fast!). The accidents are usually with the high-end aerobatic planes with pilots doing stunts.

I took flying lessons in a J3 when I was fifeteen years old and a member of the local Civil Airpatrol. This was immediately after the Airforce began. My pilot was a woman who was in the Womens Air Corp. during WWII and flew B-17's from the west coast to the east coast. She was a short person, much like myself and being in the back seat as the instructor in a tail-dragging plane, she would have me pull my self up out of my seat using the internal framing in order to give her taxi directions.

Awesome shots John!!! And it brought back some get memories. My Dad had one just like that. Was sure fun to take rides with him when I was little. He had to give it up because of heart trouble.

John, tell that to Capt. Sullenberger.

I don't think that's exactly what he had in mind, either.
