Northern Pacific Steam engine #684, 1920's Montana Elk Hunt

A customer brought in this 4x5 negative today for scanning and prints. Its from a popular "Elk Train" hunt that took place near Gardiner, Montana from the 1890's through the late 1930's. Steamer #684 was used on the run in the 1920's until its retirement in 1928. Its now on display in a train museum in North Dakota. I love these old negatives I get brought in at times. Posted here with the owners permission. I hope some of you enjoy this slice of history.

Very interesting. There must have been some huge elk herds in those days.

The herds were so huge back then that in 1910 Montana started capturing live elk and shipping then all over the country to repopulate areas that had been hunted out.

Montana first enacted regulations in 1889, our first game wardens were hired in 1901. The history of wildlife conservation and regulation here is a very long one. You need to realize that back at the time of this photo, hunting was primarily for FOOD, not sport. See any "trophy" racks in that picture???

I was fully aware of that and that was the only reason I ever hunted or fished. Got it from my Grandfather who brought home rabbit and squirrel regularly and that was some times the only protein the family would get.

The permanence of B&W negatives from the chemical properties of silver, if the particles are protected by both gelatin and an envelop. History is not, however, so kind to color negatives, also for chemical reasons.

Where I live in Ontario two of the species that were hunted to extinction- elk and wild turkeys,
were re-introduced back in the 1990's or so. They have both taken off and have done well.
Elk are majestic creatures!
