I have been a follower of this website for many years and have learned much. This is the first time I have listed a question. I am trying to obtain EXIF metadata for the images from my Nikon Coolpix L-830. Recently several individuals have suggested downloading "Faststone image viewer" or "Irfan View". I have downloaded both sites, but there is no indication as to how I can get to this metadata. One instruction from the UHH forum stated by using the Irfan view , then click on the info icon (lower case i in a blue circle), then click on EXIF. My problem is that I cannot find any info icon. Please help me find the EXIF data.

Interestingly it seems the shutter-count is not recorded for mirrorless cameras, although they too have mechanical shutters (in addition to electronic ones on some models). Why only DSLRs (mirror and shutter types)

To access the Information screen, click on the Image selection along the top menu bar. Information will be the first choice in the window that opens. It will be grayed out if no image is present in the viewer. A short cut to the Information screen is simply press the letter i on your keyboard.

Try a program called PIE (Picture Information Extractor) from Picmeta Systems. Lots and lots of data in the "free" version.

By far the BEST Exif data reader available. The paid version is identical but allows you to make changes or create data.

IF you have Windows - right click on the file and select properties and then the details tab - EXIF is found there

If you have a mac just open the image in 'Preview' and click on 'get info' . The table will give you partial EXIF including camera type, focal length, shutter speed and aperture.

Thank all of you for your suggestions. However, I am still at a loss. I previously mentioned "Faststone viewer" and " IRFan View". rmalarz gave me instructions to access the Information screen, but I do not know to what system he is referring. The PIE from Picmeta Systems appears to only work on a PC, and I have a Mac. The Mac suggestion to open an image in Preview and click on "get info" does not work since I do not have a "get info" button. I have operating system 10.6.8, and this may not be covered. Are there any other suggestions?

In Irfanview I use the menu. Click on Image. The first item in the drop down is information. That will open a card with some information. At the bottom left of that page is the EXIF button.

Ah, Louis, I wish you'd have mentioned, or I'd seen, that you use a Mac. Most of the programs mentioned are for PCs. Google Irfanview for mac. There are some alternative programs mentioned. Perhaps one of those will work for you.

Thank you Bill de. I have again downloaded the Pixillion system from Infanview and added it to my Applications folder. Then I transferred it to the Dock in my Mac. I added an image to the Preview. When I clicked on to the "Image" button, nothing happens. There is no drop down. What am I doing wrong?

Thank you all for your kind suggestions. It appears that there is no program that will work on my mac to get EXIF data on my images.

I have never seen Pixillion connected to Irfanview. What I am using is only called Irfanview.

Bill de, when I go to the Irfanview website and follow the instructions to download the program, I get the Pixillion program. I have tried this three times and always get the Pixillion download. Your instructions do not work with this system.

Download Phil Harvey's Exiftool package, at www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/

Exiftool actually is the best of all Exif data programs, and it will run on anything (because Perl runs on everything, and Exiftool is written with Perl). It is also updated regularly (most recently just yesterday on February 10th), so if you keep your system up to date it will read data from the newest cameras without missing a beat.

Note that it does not come with a GUI interface, but they are available. The internal command line interface allows the maximum flexibility for a massively complex program. When you first get it running, just do one thing:

>exiftool dsc_0001.jpg

That will print out essentially all relative meta data for that image. Then try reading the manual, which you can see by simply running the program with no arguments. It is entirely possible that what you see will mean virtually nothing to you! Don't worry. When you want to do something, whatever it is, just post a question (put "exiftool" in the thread title) and others will demonstrate how to do it.
