My father had Canon equipment 50 years ago when I first started to get into photography. It's that simple for me.
I've pick Canon for a logical reason, all my friends used canon at that time so I had a deep pool of knowledge to reach for in case of problems.
I have been a camera enthusiast for many many years, not really knowing a thing about cameras except to use the auto focus. My first camera was a Nikon FE2.....it was always out of focus because I knew nothing about the camera itself and manual shooting. Eventually I took a course in photography and bought a canon and then another Nikon. I now own a Canon 7D , a Panasonic bridge camera Lumix DMz1000, a Nikon D7000 and just bought a Canon sx50 plus a lot of other point and shoot and older Nikons. The Nikons are not as user friendly as a canon but take a sharper picture, the canon is a reliable easy to operate and figure out old workhorse but takes soft pictures. So I'm sort of a camera nut and use them all for different things.

I bought a Canon T3 about 10 years back. Graduated to a T5 and recently to a T6i which I am quickly making friends with. I'm almost retired (down to half days...12 hours) and now have time to learn more about my long time hobby. Hope to be a good photographer when I grow up. The Hog is a very helpful site.
My first was an Exakta 35mm film SLR that I bought used from Harvey Milk's store in the mid-70s. I tried some astrophotography with a Polaroid using 20,000ASA B7W film packs and a 14.25" f/9 Cassegrain telescope body. Too much light pollution from suburban San Jose and too pick of a telescope to head of to the mountains.
Next was an Olympus OM-something with a nice piece of 180mm f/something glass.
Current is a Nikon D90 that I bought when it first came out. It was the first Nikon DSLR I could afford and I found a beautiful, used Nikkor DX 12-24 F/4 lense that is my current workhorse camera.
When the market calms down later this year I will make an investment in a new kit. There is a lot coming on the market in APS-C. FX and medium format. A friendly little bird is telling me Sony is ready to blast the market open with 100mP imaging chips so it is going to be interest later this year with FX and MF product.
My first SLR was a Practica, but when I saw the quality pics from a Nikon in 1959, I bought the Nikon F . Never looked back.
I don't recall why I chose Nikon but, I'm glad I did. I'm very happy. I do remember that it was a choice between Nikon and Canon.
