I've always had my GPS unit mounted on a base attached to my dashboard, rather than suction-cupped to the windshield. It's not in my way, and it's not going to fall off. I the power cord wired permanently into the car's electrical system, so it doesn't use a 12v power point. How about you? Where do you put your GPS?
The GPS display on both my car and motorcycle is built into the dashboard.

I buy it mounted/pre-installed with the vehicle. Not only is it somewhat more secure it is larger and easier to see, no obstructions on the dash, mirror or windshield.

We mount ours on the dashboard with the use of a weighted mount. we use a 12v power socket so that the gps can be put away and out of site.

I do the same with Google navigation / Android.
IMHO, Google nav works better than most/ all built in car systems and some stand alones.

I agree that cell phone GPS works better than those in cars. All you have to do is hit the "home" button and ask for directions. You do not have to look at a map unless you want to. Siri, and I think that the Android equivalent, too, will just start talking giving turn by turn directions. When I traveled all over the country on business, that feature was very handy!
Over the rev counter on the instrument panel.
The "Navman" is a Kiwi unit that's got a big bright display
and you get a selection of male and female voices you can choose
from.
Currently the lady that tells me when to turn sounds just like Nigella Lawson...
When the distance to turn is 200 metres she counts them down in increments of 50 metres.
As the turn is being executed, she shouts "SECOND GEAR! FLAT TO THE BOARDS!"...
Gorgeous voice and accent. Yum!

Interesting location
Keeps the view forward clear.
We keep it on the windshield on the new cars, used to use a weighted holder on my Jimmy, fits different on our Subarus, we want it up where we can see the speed we are going, lots of low speed limits around here, basic speed of 25mph for the whole island, lower around schools, couple of roads a bit higher, lot of up and down, also easier to see in traffic than the speed dial on the dash, plus we get red light camera warnings, BTW we have speed cams too,

I have to pay for data, so I can't use my phone.

I used a good routing app - forget the name - but it gobbled up my data. I didn't have the phone plugged in, either, so it gobbled up my battery.

I had one or two built-in GPS systems, but I liked Garmin better. On one trip, I used both, and the Garmin was faster and more direct. I can also transfer it from one vehicle to another.

That weighted mount is surprisingly good. I use the glue-on mount and slide the GPS into that. Although they say one of the glue disks is permanent, I removed it from a car with no trouble. You can buy the mounts with the little stalk for the GPS attached, but it's hard to find the stalks themselves. I ordered a couple form ebay - about $8.00.
