I have two DSLR bodies. Of the 336 cameras tested by
www.dxomark.com,
one of mine gets a score of 86 and is #33 on their list.
The other one gets a score of 83 and is #44 on their list.
I consider that to be "respectable".
Some people earlier in this thread got quite "testy" when I suppose they discovered
that their camera wasn't high on the list.
If that sets you off, then for sure don't start exploring the over eleven thousand lenses
they have tested and given ratings. The best lens (a Sigma) gets a score of 51 on a
floating scale. The worst lenses get a score of only 6.
The median average (exactly in the middle of the list) is a mediocre 16.
In general, prime lenses score much higher than zoom lenses.
You got one thing right, Canon were the best, but not any more
Sony A7R II like Robert says.

Hmmm. I'll have to see how many of those I see at major sporting events.

Do you shoot major sporting events?
I sincerely believe that each one of us should use what fits better his or her photography. Quality today is all over, no matter camera brand.
I have used Nikon cameras and lenses for more than 50 years and only in one occasion I had issues with a camera and it was the N6006. It was using batteries as if there was no tomorrow so I had to return it.
Over the years service to the cameras I own has been practically non existent. My 1963 Nikon F has seen service only once and still performs like new.
I am not a professional and I do not shoot sports that often but when I needed any of my cameras to do the job the camera did not put me down.
I know nothing of Nikon professional services but I have to assume they do a similar job like Canon does.

If you go to the website
www.dxomark.com which independently rates camera sensor image quality (and also lenses)
you will discover that they have tested 336 cameras.
Of the top fifteen cameras they have tested and ranked there are six Nikons-
in positions 2 (score 97), 5 (score 96), 7 (score 95), 8 (score 94), 9 (score 94) and 10 (score 93).
Sadly there is only one Canon (the 5D Mark IV) in position #15 with a score of 91.
By the way, the current top ranked camera is the Sony A7R II in position #1 with a score of 98.

80% of professionals use Canon?...time to dump the junk and wake up!
Amazing... the MK4 seems to be the only Canon achieving a very sad 15th in rank on the dox mark...LOL
Time to rethink and sell. Hmmmm...Nikon or a Sony? ...and for sure a crop sensor with FF glass...

That's OK, no bubble is burst, We don't care what DXO says! Canon for some reason is the #1 camera in sales in the world. Just for the record it take a lot more then just a sensor to make a camera. Canon has the better system and a much better choice of lenses. Lets look at the finished products, can you really tell the difference, without a micro scope?? My brother shoot a Nikon but I still talk to him!
Do you live your whole life this way?
Whichever company sells the most product must inherently be the best quality?
I suppose that is one way to decide what music to listen to,
or what restaurant to eat at.

You most likely aren't old enough to remember but back in the day the record that was played or bought the most wound up being #1 on the Top 40 . As to restaurants just follow Ronald Mac Donald. Does that mean that it's the best quality, no , but that's where you'll find most of the people, more bang for the buck. Have fun and shoot what you have, this subject always seems to bring out the best in our friendly photographers.

Its been a long time since most of the people go to MacDonalds. That's not a good example.
