Having Presidents salute military members in uniform is a fairly new phenomenon. Traditionally, you salute when you are in uniform. When Reagan began saluting the military, he was criticized by the military because it wasn't proper. Of course, being the President, he could do whatever he wanted. Now it has come full circle. If a non-military President, not wearing a military uniform, doesn't salute, he's criticized. People are very finicky.
I would rephrase that a bit: "People are stupid"
I just wish someone would teach them how to salute properly. I would cringe when I saw Obama, and Clinton attempt to salute.
I think Jerry was trying to be kind with his wording!

Well, I didn't want to come right out and say it.
Under current law a US Military Retiree, in civilian clothing, may use the salute rather than the right hand placed over the heart when paying honors to the Flag (Country) such as during playing of the National Anthem at a sports event.
Jerry you say: "Of course, being the President, he could do whatever he wanted.". Is it true? Doesn't he have to obey the constitution?
I am not American, I just don't know.

Saluting isn't covered in the Constitution, and that was all I was talking about. Of course, Presidents have been known to go off on their own, regarding the Constitution.

Yes the president has to follow the constitution, as all Americans have to. However, with regard to saluting it's not a constitutional issue. Basically it is in the rules for military and for the rest of us it is in the law, but not the constitution!

Obama saluting....
Black Power...I mean, whas up, homey?
Ok it looks scary. But nothing wrong happened so far. So what is your point?
The President is the 'Commander in Chief' of the Armed Forces.
A salute is his respect to his members
