Web Hosting of Photo Galleries

A long time ago, I created and now maintain a website for my high school class. Included there are galleries of photos from the various reunions and other class events. The hosting is through an ordinary web hosting service and does not include a way to do slideshows. I would like to upgrade and consolidate all the various photo galleries. They can reside on another site, as I can link to it.

Photos from the latest reunion are now hosted on my SmugMug site. There, I had to turn off a lot of the features (header/banner, sales info, etc.) since I am doing this as a service to the class and not for commercial purposes. Afterall, they are a collection of photos from many classmates, not necessarily my photos.

Cost will enter into the equation. I have looked at Squarespace and the cost varies between $144 & $216/yr, depending on level of service desired. Wordpress costs $36 to $99/yr, again depending on service level. And, yet there are others... so many to choose from. But, I know almost nothing about what is available or what will suit my needs.

Do any of you have a recommendation for a service where I could place all these reunion photos in separate galleries for easy use? And, not break the bank at the same time? I'd like the photo galleries to look professional and have a slideshow capability.

Any help you can provide would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I AM A PHOTOGRAPHER AND I PAY ROUGHLY $40 A YEAR ON WEEBLY. WHAT I INCLUDE IS VARIOUS THINGS THAT I DO, (WEDDINGS, SENIORS, FAMILIES AND CHILDREN, ETC. IT HAS (AT A HIGHER PRICE, WITH THE CAPACITY TO SELL WHICH I DON'T USE.

I SEND LOW RESOLUTION PHOTOS TO THE SITE SO PEOPLE CAN SEE THEIR PHOTOS, BUT ARE UNABLE TO PULL THEM FROM THE SITE FOR PRINTING. SOUND PERFECT FOR YOUR NEEDS.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll check into Weebly... I am assuming it provides a slideshow capability.

Depending on your needs there are plenty of sites to use - for not much money, to alot of money ;)

Flicker - free for limited total size, $25.00 a year for much larger total size. Flicker is very easy to manage, and you can control who can see images as well as if they are downloadable.

YES, AND VIEWERS CAN ALSO GO THROUGH THE PHOTOS INDIVIDUALLY FOR LONGER VIEWING. YOU CAN SET UP THE LENGTH OF TIME IN SLIDESHOW FORMAT, AND I USUALLY USE 3-5 SECONDS PER IMAGE. IT HAS THE CAPACITY TO ADD MUSIC, WHICH I DON'T USE.

ONCE LOADED INTO THE FILE, THE PHOTOS CAN BE REARRANGED, AND TEXT ADDED IF NEEDED. FOR YOU THAT MIGHT BE HELPFUL TO IDENTIFY PEOPLE BY NAME, ETC. FOR ME, I LOAD LOW RES JPEG IMAGES IN THE SAME SEQUENCE AS I TOOK THEM, MAKING COMPARISONS EASIER, FOR MY CLIENTS.

I use 500px, mentioned above, for my prime shots, and FOTKI, which is superb and not too expensive for all my photos

I use Squarespace (see https://www.squarespace.com/). Squarespace offers several templates, some with up to 20 galleries free, after that you pay $$.

To RickH & G_Manos...

Thanks for your suggestions. I am looking at Squarespace and WordPress, trying to find something that suits my needs. For about the same money, Weebly is another consideration.

An alternative would be a slideshow plugin for the website. Tried that early on, but it got very cumbersome, working with someone in Romania. My help requests would go unanswered for many days or a week. Not the way I like to work. But, I could go back to that, if all else fails.

And, for those that suggested 500px, I have an account there, but I don't think that will do what I want it to do. I want the galleries to be private, yet available to the classmates. I'll look again.

I urge you to give Fotki a look. One of the very positive features is the ability to have private galleries as well as a "your eyes only" work area www.fotki.com

Yep, all caps are hard to read, plus his fingers may have gotten hoarse typing at decibel level.
