I broke my Canon Powershot Elph 350 HS point and shoot camera and am looking for a replacement that I can carry anywhere for spontaneous snap shots. I think "point and shoot" is a meaningless term. When my D750 is in Auto, it's a P&S. I prefer "compact." Below are some links that might help.

Shoots raw and has a viewfinder, something I consider essential.

The first one you see here is a $4,250 Leica.

My go to point and shoot is the Nikon L830. It has a fantastic 30x optical zoom. They retail $170-280. You can find it on ebay and Amazon a bit cheaper. I love this camera. The newer version is the L840. It does have the option for handheld or tripod night shots. Here are a few photos from that camera.

Interesting reply Charles Brown, but it would be helpful if you would indicate what camera you eventually settled on.

Had the same problem as you once before. Found there are a whole lot of cameras to chose from. I made a list of the specific features that I wanted in the camera, low light capability, stabilization, wide to mid range zoom, etc. Then went shopping on the internet for cameras that had my listed features. Once found I then looked up reviews done for the cameras on my list. With this information narrowed down my list to the top five. Then went shopping in local stores to actually see and hold the cameras. I bought one from a local store. Found that once I started using the camera it really wasn't the right one for me. Took it back and exchanged for another camera and same thing happened. Took it back and exchanged for another camera. This time I got the right one and still have it. Funny thing, started out wanting a P&S camera but ended up with a bridge camera. The experience taught me to think about my camera features in order of importance because no one camera is ever going to meet all of your wants. Just have to decide want features you are willing to live without.

Sony RX100 III Pocket size, big sensor! This for photography, your cell phone for snaps.

I recently bought a Nikon Coolpix S7000 from the Nikon Refurbished site for $169. It is perfect for what I wanted it for. Takes movies of my grandson (8) playing hockey as well as still images. Fits right in a pocket. Good luck!

I just bought the same camera at Walmart, they had a brand new one on close out for $69. Couldn't pass it up at that price!
It has a 20X zoom, stereo speakers, VR, 1080 video, and can do time lapse too. I really like it because it is less than an inch thick and can easily fit in your pocket.

When I lost my old Canon compact, I went shopping and ended up with two: a Sony WX 350 that has only modest features but *really* compact and with a 20x zoom. I will not be making any large prints from this little guy, but it is really handy, easy to have along no matter where I am going or how. About the size of a flip phone. For more dedicated photo runs I got a bridge camera, again Sony, since it had many options, an astonishing 50x lens, "felt" more like the old SLR experience, and was also modest in price. This after looking very closely at DSLR (entry cameras not particularly great, others pricey and all on the large side for me) and mirrorless (very nice options, lots of features, larger sensors generally but again more camera than I felt I needed).

The advice of narrowing the field a bit then actually handling the cameras is spot on. I would have chosen differently without handling and noting how the features were organized, and how the menus worked. These kinds of considerations are not necessarily better and worse between brands, but more like how you prefer things to be set up.

I agree with the suggestion of a Canon G1X. Actually, any of the new G series would be excellent options.
For all my DSLR photo work I'm dedicated to the Pentax bodies, but for my casual, travel, impromptu photo work I use a Canon G series P&S.

I have also had good luck with my Nikon Coolpix S 7000. It has some limitations due to the small sensor but it has a very wide zoom range and is so small you can put it in a shirt pocket. I use mine a lot for hiking. Image quality is excellent for a small sensor camera. I paid about $200 new but price seems to vary above and below this amount. As someone previously pointed out, refurbished is also an option.

I picked-up a Panasonic Lumix LX10 a few months ago. Main reason was the Leica lens, F/1.4-F/2.8 and 20MP. It does have a pop-up flash if necessary. Has some special features that I really like 4K photo and focus stacking. Attached are a few shots using focus stacking mode. $697 at Adorama, B & H.

Taken a F/2.8, single shot no stacking on this one

I helped my niece in her search and she settled on the same one I was leaning towards, the Canon G7X. She loves it.

So far, the only requirement you've listed is that it needs to be a pocketable camera. If you provide us with a list of other wanted features, such as zoom range, viewfinder vs. LCD panel, only, sensor size, etc., and if you have a particular brand you're interested, that would be most helpful in us trying to make a recommendation. It would also be helpful to let us know what you intend to use the camera for.
