I joined this site several years ago and have been following the discussions as time permitted. Now that I have retired and have some time I am looking at getting more involved and posting some photographs and getting involved in several of the discussion groups. I thought now would be a good time to ask a question concerning the problem I am having with the GPS in my D5300. The camera will not recognize the downloaded a gps file on any of the sd cards I have tried. I have tried several times on my i mac running OSX Sierra 10.12.2 and on an older pc running windows 7 both with no success. I have been on the phone with many technicians at Nikon with no success. I had sent the camera to Nikon for repair at their request. The gps file update worked once then never again. I sent the camera back a second time at their request and, it was returned stating it was set to Nikon specs. and worked perfectly. Again, I was able to update the file once and not again. Now they are telling me to send it back a third time. This last time I was on the phone with the technician for just about an hour walking through every scenario that he and his supervisor could think of to get the update to work. Unfortunately, they were unsuccessful so, back it goes again. Has anyone else had this problem with their D5300 GPS and, if so how did you get it corrected?

I realize the GPS feature was one part of what you intentionally bought. How are the many other features of the camera performing in your estimation? Have you asked Nikon to refund all or a major portion of what you paid for the camera so that you might select something else? Have you considered simply selling the camera, perhaps with an upfront warning that you had difficulty getting that particular feature to work as expected? In short, you seem like an intelligent fella, why are you beating your head against a stone wall?

Thanks for your comments rjaywallace. I am giving Nikon one last attempt before I request a refund or trade in on something else. If I get another camera it will be without the GPS and I will purchase an external unit.

I have given up on external units in favor of an iPhone app. There are several available for free or nominal prices. I use one called GPX Master. It will create a GPX file track of where you have been with very little battery drain. The file then syncs with your computer through Dropbox.

Then there are several programs that will match up you photos with the locations on the GPX file. Lightroom includes this function and many other pp programs (Apple Photos, Aperture, for example) at least allow you to geotag manually by dragging pictures onto a map. I use a standalone program called Photolinker, which does a fantastic job.

I have a D5300. It works well with the GPS. Have you downloaded and installed the current assisted GPS file? Download the current assisted GPS file from the following URL:
http://nikonimglib.com/agps2/ Then copy it to your "NIKON" folder on the memory card. Insert card into camera and update "Location Data - GPS Positions - Update A-GPS data -Yes. This procedure is easy to miss but necessary to allow the GPS to function. It will also create a track of where you have been. I have not done that. I just did an update now. It is good from 2/2 until 2/17. It is a pain but necessary to make the GPS function properly. Any questions - jerrygosney@bvu.net.

I don't use the GPS in my D5300 because of the battery hit. But when I did it simply put the GPS data in the image metadata. No separate file. So I do not understand your issue.

Thanks lickinn. I have downloaded the GPX Master app and was looking into the Photolinker per your recommendation. Unfortunately it is not compatible, so they say, with my i mac OSX Sirerra. I looking for other options now as I doubt Nikon will fix the problem with the camera's GSP system given a third chance.

The problem is that the GPS system doesn't function consistently or acceptably without the updated a gps file which the camera cannot read for some reason. I have been requested to send the camera back for a third time in two months. We'll see what happens. If still nonfunctional again, I will need to look at alternatives.

I might have the name photolinker wrong, because mine runs fine on Sierra. I will look when I get home and let you know. Look in the App Store; there are several that will work or just Google geotagging software for Mac. If you do the latter, you can go on free trials and choose the one you like best.

I've never updated mine but it worked fine last time I used it.

I'll test it when we get home next month. I didn't bring the D5300 along this time.

Oh, let me check my wife's. Never used or updated it.
