I still do both film and digital. Film is relegated to B&W in my Mamiya 645 and 4X5 . I do all the processing from film to print. Digital just cannot match the quality of film or the depth of a silver print. I back up with my digital for exposure. Digital is used for color since digital prints are archival and traditional film color is not since cibachrome and Kodachrome are gone. I'm old school, I previsuallize my photos and make one or sometimes 2 shots. When I was shooting an 8x10 I only shot once. Film was over $20 per pop then. I can't even imagine what it costs nowadays. None of this shooting 100 images and hope that I got it. That just isn't being a photographer to me. It is being an equipment operator. Sorry to offend all you equipment operators.

Absolutely. I still have my Maxxum 7000i so all my Sony Alpha mount lenses will work. Looking forward to shooting some Ekatchrome with the Maxxum & Tamron 150-600.

I did love the days of the darkroom and developing my own film and then printing. The love of seeing the print coming to fruition in the developer. Those were wonderful days but once I became sensitive to the chemicals I had to stop using a darkroom. When digital came out I became elated as now I can use my computer as my darkroom. No, I would not go back to film.

Anyone remember truprint? you used to get their envelopes in magazines and you would send in your film and get back prints and negatives and a free film.

It was all a bit slow wasn't it?

Now these days it could all be a bit faster, e.g i ordered a new battery for my mac this morning it should be here tomorrow thats fast enough.

So how about if you could do that with film shoot at the weekend in the post monday and by close of business tuesday have high resolution scans ready for you to view and edit. Yes edit and upload the edited photo.

At this stage you can choose to have prints made or get your negatives sent back to you. Actually no reason you can't get your negatives sent back to you with a free film and still get prints made.

Notice that you can also upload your digital edits, which means you don't have to use film.

so it would be around 24 hours to seeing your negatives for the first time Prints of what you want and the size you want in your hand in say 48 hours excluding weekends.

film has to be a premium service $30 would have me using it regularly maybe $50 would be top end for me for developing Black & White film.

color film i can get developed for €7 a roll but no black & white development or film.

Offer a service like this and i'm going to shoot black & white film regularly, undoubtedly digital is going to be my main choice for day to day. It would be like eating at home and going to a restaurant say once a month.

Good black & white printing is hard and quite expensive to do at home, large prints especially, Digital or Film. I would like to see my work as a silver halide print.

So yes with a well organised developing and scanning service i would shoot more film.

I think kodak with ectachrome probably have a workable business. An independent specialist lab could have too.

For color, I'd stay with digital, but for B&W I will use film for the rest of my life and if they quit making film, I will learn to coat my own 4X5 and go back to glass plate. Digital B&W will never be better than a real silver paper print from a negative, can't duplicate the look of the blacks.

Still have my Nikon 35mm film cameras. Other than a rare outing with them I am going to stick with my digital equipment.

Overall NO!
I still have some film cameras, a few with memories attached. I found a box of 4x5, 120 and 35 mm film with my other stuff in storage, it is a mix of stuff from 15 to 30+ years old and some sealed cans of chemicals in there also. If I get tempted I will use the lightproof changing bag to load the reels and canister then develop and after drying scan it*. But I doubt if any of that film is good, I just haven't gotten around to cleaning things out.
I am asthmatic, my lungs do not miss the darkroom at all.

I've had disappointing results trying to use old developers like Acufine, even from unopened cans. I'd buy fresh chemicals, even to experiment with old film.

Now I no longer work in a lab there is no discount on film or processing. This makes digital a lot,ore attractive.

For those who think that a decent black and white print cannot be obtained from a digital camera. I took this today and post processed it into a B&W image.

Just been making enquiries about black & white processing, a lot of the websites are vague about what they can do so i sent this enquiry

I am looking for developing scanning and printing of Black & White Film.

Can you develop my film
Scan it (at what resolution)
Make my Scans Available to Download
Allow me to Edit those scans and upload
Print specified images at various sizes, papers cost please.
and finally return my negatives with a suitable blank film?
Along with ordered Prints and maybe a CD with the scans, digital delivery of tiff files would be fine.

Well thats what i'm looking for, what can you deliver?

thank you

No. I sold off all of my film cameras including a 4x5 Calumet. I sold all of my darkroom stuff including my Bessler 23C ... Couldn't go back even if I wanted to. No again.

Of course digital can be converted to BW and good quite good. Nothing film did can be done in digital, but digital can do MUCH more than film. Click on these to see the better resolution version.

Maybe you need a custom service bureau. That's pretty demanding. It is probably easier to soup and scan your own.
