I was able to upgrade a Vista machine to Win10, but I forget the details, but it works fine. I think I went to Win7 and then Win10.

Yeah i did that too the Win 7 was a bit iffy but the Windows 10 installer saw activated and legitimised it.

It depends on the version OEM are tied sort of I've managed to use a hp oem disk on a different hp machine to upgrade it. So OEM A to OEM A can work sometimes.

Then you have retail copies and these are portable, you probably have to tell Microsoft you have upgraded and usually probably always will activate for you.

except maybe

FCKGW RHQQ2 YXRKT 8TG6W 2B7Q8

but that was XP anyway :)

Yes, as I said - confusing. :)

As you are backed up I would format and do a fresh install, no way would microsoft be asking for money to correct these issues so there is something else there. It could well be that you have an application telling you about nonexistent errors.

You should be able to find an install iso from somewhere. It doesn't need to be 100% legit as you just want to run the install not the crack software your machine is already registered with microsoft with a unique id so when your machine goes to register it will be already authorised.

next update everything to current, reinstall your software, restore your data.

Yes, it wasn't a Microsoft application but some 3rd party "utility" called Remo Optimizer from Remo Software Private Limited. They ran a supposed scan looking for errors but when it came time to repair them (they said the software was going to repair some, but didn't) they demanded a credit card number and payment of 29.95 to do any repairs. So, I removed it. My system is working fine and I will run "other" software to verify or fix errors. I didn't realize when I installed it that it WASN'T Microsoft.. I felt like it was false or misleading advertising (not unusual on the internet).

Congratulations on reusing the case.

And 6 internal HDD's and not needing to reinstall a OS, just activating.

I can do that too.

They fix it for mac and android too, ... I am undecided about this tool there is some advertising malware which promotes this tool heavily, some say its not their fault bad guys are promoting their products. Me I think something stinks. Personally i prefer to keep an install image with software preinstalled somewhere. Its quicker to format reinstall the image than try and trace whats been fouled up admittedly this works best on a domain where any computer can be logged on and used. Individually setting up PC's is just way too much work.

In certain circumstances , yes thats true.

http://superuser.com/questions/982577/how-to-run-windows-10-from-an-external-hard-drive

Can you make a clone of a windows 10 OEM install from a hdd on a Hp say and run it as a USB Boot on a Dell?

If you can do this, can you point me towards the Microsoft Support Page that tells you how to do it :)

To be fair the easy route is to create a Virtual machine and move that between hosts.

I have a few mac's this one i'm using has a 1 TB drive which was cloned from the old 250 GB drive I picked up an older mac and upgraded and fixed that one up as well since the HDD on it was running an old version of osx and was smaller i just swopped the 250 drive into that mac and pressed the power button. No activation necessary and my account was as I left it on the other mac.

Activation only really exists because Microsoft sells operating systems and Apple sells hardware. Linux sells neither and just works :)

I have no idea where to find it on a Windows support page. I just know how to do it from long experience. The only real problem with doing it is that you may have to snag drivers off the internet after installation. Some manufacturers have proprietary hard ware and therefore drivers and some don't.

I did the update to windows 10 and have had no problems except one minor one that MS free customer service walked me through. I have 2 internal drives, one for data only and 3 external data storage drives for back up, no issues at all (Knock on vinyl covered particle board). I have in the past had issues where MS has been on the phone with me for as long as it took to resolve it, I was very impressed, even had time to chit chat while we were waiting about Indian culture. They also have a paid service which is the easier phone number to find on line and I don't use that.
